What's the intended way to hold an N64 controller?

left hand holds the middle stick, right thumb/pointer finger pinch the analog stick
In practice, the first/right position is what you will use in the majority of N64 games. The D-pad is more often used for inventory or as a command cross for many 3D games. The only time you'll use the D-pad as the main directional input is when playing 2D platformers and fighters. There isn't really a time you'd use both D-pad and stick at once, besides those who mistakenly use the awful default scheme in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
