Konami mecha-themed baseball game--sounds kind of cool, right? Not quite since it was a US market exclusive so they made the players look more generic. It's hardly a bad game of course and certainly a bit different take on the format, but...
>>12511615Konami were not that big on sports games, the only other 8-bit baseball game they had was one of the worst games in the entire Famicom library. Guess the market was very saturated and they figured there was no point in competing with ten other luckswing franchises.
the plastic that went into this should have gone into localizing Mouryou Senki Madara or Crisis Force, but I'm not a Konami USA executive in 1989, so...
>>12511623they already localized a bunch of shmups, no need for another one
>>12511623Base Wars made sense, they didn't have a baseball entry for the US market.
>>12511627We got Twinbee, Salamander, and Gradius. That was good enough.
>>12511636>the NOA simp has arrived
>>12511638You mean Konami US? They were the ones in charge of deciding what got localized.
>>12511641https://nescartdb.com/search/advanced?publisher=Konami&page=1They localized most of the stuff that was worth having (Konami's FDS output not shown here) on top of several US exclusives. Yeah it might have been cool to get Gradius II or Mouryou Senki Madara but I can understand why we didn't.
>>12511631>Base Wars made sense, they didn't have a baseball entry for the US marketDidn't really have one for Japan either for that matter. (^:
>>12511617>the only other 8-bit baseball game they had was one of the worst games in the entire Famicom libraryGanbare Pennant Race, you naff. Exciting Baseball wasn't their only luckswing game.
>ten posts>a bunch of arguing about why Konami US didn't localize this and that Famicom game>almost no mention of the OP gameGuess no one actually played Base Wars as a kid.
>>12511657I rented it once. It seems cool at first, but you quickly realize the best strategy is to not actually play baseball, but to rush bases and destroy the other team's robots. Why bother trying to hit a ball when you can just take the bases and get home runs without ever swinging at the ball?
>>12511636granted, although they were pretty early ones. the later ones like Crisis Force were technical showpieces for Konami's VRC mappers and expensive to produce so i can see why we didn't get them.
>>12511623Cosmic Wars and that one was a standard Nintendo mapper cartridge it didn't use a Konami mapper so less of an issue to localize.
>>12511617Konami released more sports games on NES/Famicom than any other developer, dip
>>12511678yes because American kids were going to love playing hour long fights between fleets of spaceships where you have to read the manual to have any clue what's going on instead of Rollergames or Blades of Steel
what i'm saying is that kind of game like Cosmic Wars existed because the Famicom largely replaced the home computer market in Japan and there wasn't a real need for them here
>>12511678p. sure that was because the game used a battery save and none of the VRC mappers they had out when it was developed could support that
>>12511678>Cosmic WarsI refuse to believe any human has ever completed a single map.
>>12511719As he said, battles take literally hours even though the AI is about as braindead as you can expect from an 8-bit game.
Posting the actual best Konami NES/FC sport game
>>12511719https://w.atwiki.jp/famicomall/pages/923.htmlTheir time was about 4 days.
>>12511692>>12511687since even in Japan they needed the sales of bazillions of sports games to brainless normies to pay the bills and fund the actually cool but niche games like this
>>12511678>MSRP was 66 USDholy fuck that was expensive for a simple MMC1 game. yeah i get the battery added to the cost but even so.
>>12511687There must have been some market for grand strategy games considering how many Koei brought over.
>>12511793They always overcharged for them because the target audience was seen as being rich adult strategy game nerds.
>>12511798Meaning they overcharged for strategy titles.
>>12511719The computer taking 10 minutes to finish its turn is not my idea of a good time.
>thread about Base Wars becomes a thread about Cosmic WarsProof of how meh BW is I guess.
I was very disappointed this was just a regular old boring golf game with a robot on the box and not some cool combat golf game.
>>12511657it was an MMC3 battery game so it was pretty expensive
>>12511615i watched the Mexican Runner's playthrough of this. took him 9 hours to beat. pretty dumb game anyway.
Konami tried there hands at every sport under the sun (including the NFL and NHL), only their baseball and soccer games were ever any good. And EA had them beat in baseball.
>>12512360the NFL game they made on the Gameboy is a total dud, mostly because they decided to spend about $2 on it and use a 32k ROM
Cyber Wars is ok, the Goemon baseball game on the Famicom was alright but Exciting Baseball...they put out a half-complete prototype that barely ran and was all-but unplayable so they could cash in on some of those Family Stadium bucks.
>>12512369I was more referring to NFL Full Contact and NFL PrimeTime 2002.
>>12512369shit's pretty much Ten Yard Fight tierhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sGN2fvZgLM
>>12512360this retard got filtered by blades of steel lmoa
>>12512369It's a really early Gameboy title from 1990, not sure if they had larger ROMs yet. the ROMs used in the Gameboy had smaller die sizes than what the main consoles used as they had to be and they may have not had 1 megabit or up ROMs they could use yet.
>>12512436>bro just play an inferior version to what you've already gotI'll stick to Chel 01 and Rock the Rink if I want some PS1 puckery
>>12511615I played this not long ago. The season mode where you upgrade your robots is a really cool idea but it's just no fun playing against the CPU. Unless I managed to hit a home run they'd catch the ball every single fucking time no matter where it wound up.
>>12512568That's every NES baseball game. The AI always knows exactly where your ball is going to land.
>>12511615I like it a lot
