Why is it so barebones and generic when compared to SMRPG and M&LSS? 8t was released on a more powerful console than both of them but its so underwhelming and safe.

Most people (myself included) consider Paper Mario to be a worthwhile successor to Mario RPG. I don't understand what the issue is.

Regardless of that, it still manages to be funner than smrpg, plus it is peak soul.

Is it? Maybe mechanically when compared to ss but it feels more like a "mario world" than srpg and ss did

I played Superstar Saga right after Paper Mario and actively did not like Superstar Saga after enjoying Paper Mario. Very likely I was just tired of turn based combat that replaces the need for strategy with QTEs and the charm of Paper Mario was greater than that of Superstar Saga

It's such a downgrade to SMRPG, it's like they were afraid to make an actual rpg

Good. Super Mario RPG was just SquareSoft #83651 but with Mario bolted onto the side. Paper Mario actually did some cool stuff with its badge and partner system.

Superstar Saga is a bit of a slog, especially around the later parts of the game like the beach
PM64 has the exact right amount of enemies

Is it? It takes plenty of liberties and does fun stuff with the setting. It doesn't go as far as Mario and Luigi would later, but I think it did more than enough to make even familiar enemies and the like feel refreshing and new.
