>Mario's first ever 3D instalment, opening up all the possibilities to innovate on not just his world but also his moveset
>Think of how cool it would be to use the power-ups from the 2D games in a 3D environment!
>Nintendo instead doesn't add any and leaves Mario with a sub-par moveset that half the time works against him.

I don't understand, SM64 was a golden opportunity to translate what made the classic mario games so fun in the first place and the chance to implement new never seen before power-ups. The closest to a "new" power-up was the wingcap which isn't that unique or special.

they translated the dk 94 movement to 3d

I do wish they’d retained the frog suit for water levels, but otherwise I didn’t really miss the others.

Sonic Adventure is a bad video game.

mario 64 is how many decades old and still played a ton today?
one of the most popular speedrunning games

how can one improve perfection?

Everything Nintendo has done since is just them coming to terms with the fact that the answer is - you cannot

as good as M64 is, Odyssey is better.

Why did you use an image of a ROM hack?

I don't normally do this anon but this doesn't matter. SM64 was wildly successful, still has a thriving community to this day, and has high quality romhacks made for it. Instead of wondering why xyz didn't occur, live in the present.

We literally discuss shit from the past here.

they saved the powerups for sm64 ds
>>
>>12512837
This'll be my last reply in this thread. Wondering about the infinite reasons there could have been for leaving out traditional SM powerups in 64 is a fruitless endeavor. Playing SM64 romhacks made today, as far as the objective of playing video games relative to the retro video game board, is not a fruitless endeavor, because one results in tangible joy, the other is infinite, useless wondering. I'm going to go enjoy a video game now.

I remember actually thinking it was pretty shitty that there was no fire flower. It’s nice to have it validated that I wasn’t the only one
>>

Mario Galaxy 2 showed that the fire flower in a 3D Mario is an awful idea.

they were focused on designing the game around mario's basic athletic moveset. with the complexity of 3d it makes sense that a repertoire of jumps would have enough depth to carry a game.

looks more like Rareware than a first party Nintendo game overreliance on "vibe" rather than gameplay.

Galaxy 2 sucks ass so maybe it's just that one particular implementation of the fire flower in 3D that didn't work
>>
>>12513802
No, it's just a really clunky weapon in a 3D space. It's not like Galaxy implemented it 'incorrectly'.
>>
>>12512614
I had the inverse issue with the original New Super Mario Bros.
>oh man mario has all these kickass moves from the 3d games, I can't wait to use them in an OG style platformer AND with power-ups?! It's gonna be like DK94 meets Mario 3 on crack!
>get the most boring ass platformer with a limited as fuck moveset with 3 and a half nothing burger power-ups
I was so fucking frustrated.
>>
>>12513138
>>12513850
Wrong. It's very much fine in 3D Land. Less so in 3D World, where stages are wider.

>wing cap which wasn't special
They put that shit on the cover because it's a power-up that fully lets you move in 3D space. That's why it's in the game.
>>
>>12515605
>on the cover
>yet you only use it for 10% of the game
>>
>>12515607
So? Moving Mario around in 3D for the first time was the appeal of Mario 64. His power-ups were just a little extra. It's clear that a lot of SMB1's gameplay mechanics wouldn't work in 3D so they changed things. Fireflower wouldn't work. Kicking koopa shells was changed completely. The star essentially became the metal cap. And then Mario 3's power-ups were all stupid and superfluous so it makes sense they didn't bring any of them back.
>>
>>12512614
The metal cap seemed like an excuse to show off the graphics. The wing cap was cool though and didn't need to be the cape or racoon suit. And I'm sure doing 3D fireballs would have been a complete pain to try to program in what was already a groundbreaking game.
>>
>>12515506
That's moving the goalpost. It's not automatically bad just because a game is 3D.

Can't disagree with that, maybe i'm judging the game to harshly with my luxoury modern standards but still, would of been awesome to see how some of the power-ups like the frog suit would translate into 3D.

>Mario 3's power-ups were all stupid and superfluous so it makes sense they didn't bring any of them back.
don't disagree with your overall point but this tells me you're some kind of contrarian freak this board is besieged with.
>>
>>12515634
I mean yeah the water worlds in 64 were incredibly limited. I think you only use the metal cap in one of them for maybe one star. They could have come up with another hat just for those stages. I wouldn't have minded more power-ups.
Mario 64 is also just really weird because it lacks a lot of Mario iconography and feels odd.
>>
>>12513228
dude rewrote the entire sm64 source code disassembly
that's way more effort than just "vibes"
