I was alive back then. No one hated this game except for my dad who thought Squall was gay.
>final fantasy mc is gay hot take there dad
>>12512741>I was alive back then.I was too and you're correct. Many still prefer 7 but it wasn't considered a bad game. Nobody complain about the draw mechanic or the convinient plot points. All that shit came way after the fact, when forums became a thing in the early 2000's and contrarian mentallity took over.
>>12512741I was alive back then too and you're wrong. Many people did hate it. The junction system was retarded. Honestly FF8 and FF13 absolutely deserved the hate they got.
>>12512814>Many people did hate itNobody knew anybody because were all too busy being fucking kids.
>>12512741Pretty much. VIII sold and scored incredibly well and has always been seen as a good game. Idiots 20 years after the fact trying to sell this idea that the game is "le black sheep" because they grew up with Sp*ony were never and will never be the norm.
Laguna is one of the Chaddiest mofos in all FF.
>>12512741Me too. I agree, I didn't realize it was hated until maybe the late 2000s to early 2010 when "gamers" appeared. I remember seeing someone after school reading the FF8 strategy guide.
>no one hated itnice LARP, zoomie.
>>12512741I'm alive right now and you need to play better JRPGs. That being said, the localization of Squall telling everyone>No one is going to talk about me in the past-tense!was so hilariously and unintentionally badass I was really disappointed to find out the real line is more lame
>>12512741I remember it being seen as a 9/10 or 8/10 game compared to 7 which most saw as a 10/10.Finding an actual hater wasn't common but it wasn't hard to find people who were a bit letdown by it.

>>12512741I don't care what people thought in the 90s. I played this game for the first time a decade ago and fucking hated it. See, I actually play the games I dislike instead of pretending to and whining endlessly about it.
>>12512741I kinda hate the way online people hate everythingYour dad is secretly gay btw probably, did you ever ask him if he was secretly gay for men?
I got into FF in '00. Posted on FF forums daily 01-04.-I didn't like VIII that much as a 13 y.o. When I played it again in my early 30s it became my favorite game and I've played it probably 7 times in the last 5 years. I really, really like it.-On FF forums back then it was "the lesser-liked one" but wasn't universally hated.-I did not talk video games with other kids IRL except chicks, and they loved every FF. I have no idea what your average dudebro gamer thought at the time.
>>12512741I hated that my friends liked jrpg's because I thought they were gay as fuck and boring to play. Clicking around in menu's and random battles! So much fun!
>>12513418Based gameplay enjoyer
>>12512814Final Fantasy 13 was my favorite. All 3 of them
>>12513246Sounds like a (You) issue.
>>12513615my biggest problem with 13 was the party leader dying is a game over. second was the train tracks weren't even hidden at all
>>12512741I was one of the first wave of "level scaling" haters so I was immediately non-plussed. Absolutely nobody thought it was as good as 7 either. However there was no serious "it fucking sucks" backlash just because the production values were good.
>>12512741before 2007ish people didn't really hate games or movies they just said "it isn't for me" and moved on with their life
>>12512741I sort of doubt that. I was also alive back then and I used to watch my dad play the PS1 FFs (I ""helped"" by naming characters but he made me feel like I was included. By FFIX I actually got to play certain sections. Good times) and this is the only one he dropped instead of finishing. I think in reality we were just fucking kids and most people weren't online yet to see what others thought. The closest we had were gaming magazines and they usually wouldn't be too harsh on anything for the most part.
i think people are just too used to be restricted. ff8 gives you too many options and its all entirely within your control, to make it your bitch or to become the bitch yourself. it's a game you need to pace yourself, people who are stuck in a grinding mindset won't get the full enjoyment of the game.
Squall is the only character in this game worth a damn.
>>12513615
>>12513870how would you notice the level scaling on your first playthrough idiot lol
