Is there any game with pixel art that reaches the level of Metal Slug ?

The trick with Metal Slug is that most of the more impressive pieces are robots or mechs, if you look at it you can see there is almost no actual animation, instead opting for individual segments that move independently.

I feel like psikyo has made substantially cooler and more elaborately animated robots. But playing arcade games in general, yes I've found snk to be extremely overrated.

Demon Front, which is based off Metal Slug but unlike most clones, the art keeps pace.

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon for the arcades. Probably the best pixel art in a beat em up period.

Irem in general has great pixel art and artists from there worked on Metal Slug. The roots are most visible in Geostorm and In the Hunt.
R-Type Leo, Ninja Baseball Batman and Blade Master are other amazing looking titles.

Why is it so hard to find modern pixel art games like this?
There are some that look great but I still think these older titles look much better.

When actually playing through games it quickly becomes apparent there isn't much going on, most sprite detail arises from the fact that there simply isn't much to animate. It's trading gameplay for flashy surface appeal. If they actually tried to make a fun game, they wouldn't have had the manpower to make such elaborate animations.
