Why wasn't Phantasy Star as popular as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy?
>>12515152Literally it just wasn't as good as either DQ or FF
>>12515152Because it was on the Sega Master System, which fewer people owned compared to the NES.
>OP answering his own question
>>12515153It's better than FF1&2, and DQ1&2. The invisible wall bullshit is retarded, but the newer Sega Ages version makes it more tolerable since it has an auto-map.Like >>12515154 said it had that misfortune of being stuck on the Master System. On the positive side, that means it still looks nice, and the dungeons scroll more smoothly than the dungeon crawlers on genesis and snes.
>>12515152Why has there never been an overhead map hack for PS1? It's been decomped for like a decade now.>inb4 some anon asks why I don't make it myselfI'm asking why there hasn't been any interest in such a thing.
>>12515178Because it's not needed. PS1 is very playable in it's original form and a better game than FF or DQ 1.
>>12515602
>>12515604Have you actually played it though? I went through it again a couple years ago and it still holds up very well. I can understand someone preferring FF1 for the replayability of different classes, but there's no way DQ1 is better in any regard. PS1 is an excellent game.
>>12515613Yes. I've played them all. DQ1 is a much better game. PS1 has no story, lousy and annoying combat, tedious pacing, and drags on forever. DQ1 is a perfect one-shot adventure, FF1 is a perfect grand adventure, both have better pacing and structure. The only nice thing about PS1 was some of the music and the dungeons were a neat gimmick, although they were all the same and again, tedious. PS did not become worth playing until IV.
>>12515620I couldn't possibly disagree more, the story alone is far better in PS1. I can't imagine someone needing an overworld hack. But whatever, like what you like.
>>12515154What did you just fucking call it…
>>12515639The "story" in Phantasy Star 1 is "there is a bad guy."
>>12515152Because they were stuck on Master System and MD, which few Japs owned, and the series ended before JRPGs truly took off outside Japan. I’m sure if a good PSX installment had been released in the late 90s, it would be more well known. It still has a huge legacy for a franchise that’s been dormant for so long, not fair to compare it to two titans of the genre that are still pumping out titles.
>>12515650It sure doesn't sound like you played it.
Alis is my girlfriend.
>>12515602This is true.>>12515604>>12515620Cope, cattle.
Because it was Sega-exclusiveIt's completely unquestionable that Phantasy Star beats FF and Phantasy Star II beats FF2 in quality, but Nintendo was practically a monopoly at the time.
>>12515647Master system, what are you going to do about it?
>>12516547Right looks better, can't even see your character on the left. Play ps2 remake instead
>>12516547>It's completely unquestionable that Phantasy Star beats FF Graphically, yes. Gameplay-wise, PS I gets embarrassed even by JRPGs released the same year. Dungeon designs are way simpler and less elaborate than Megami Tensei’s, and traversal is comparatively very slow and stiff, because you have to watch the dumb animations every time you move. Each battle only has one enemy at a time, which basically just makes every fight “mash A to win”. Just look at your image, look how much more involved the battles are in FF, up to nine enemies at a time. You can also save anywhere and anytime in PS I, completely eradicating what little excitement the gameplay might have brought.
>>12516615>Gameplay-wiseFinal Fantasy is a barely-functional game. It literally barely works. A ton of spells and systems just don't function.
>>12516623That’s standard for 8 bit RPGs. There are several times in PS I where you can get flat out softlocked. If you’re so averse to bugs maybe you shouldn’t be playing these kinds of games. No rebuttal to any of my points highlighting just how barebones the game is even for its time?
>>12516598>can't even see your character on the left
>>12516641>That’s standard for 8 bit RPGs.Weird, as far as I recall, all the spells and weapons in Phantasy Star actually work.>No rebuttal to any of my pointsYour 'points' are jokes. One game functions fine, the other barely works.
>>12516667So you’ll ignore the game-breaking bugs of PS I just mentioned because it doesn’t fit your worldview? FF I still has more weapons and spells that work than PS I does in its entirety. Second of all, I mentioned more than just FF I, which you would’ve known if you actually read my first post.
>>12516726>So you’ll ignoreYour handwaving away the fact that FF1 is fundamentally completely fucking busted by pointing to *one* issue with another game? Yes
>>12516736I’ll give you one more you for my amusement, its clear that you’ve conceded defeat in this argument a long time ago and are just trolling now.
>>12516743>I don't want to admit anything bad about my preferred game>I know, I'll just say I won!Lol
>>12516749I never even said I preferred FF I, you just seem completely incapable of understanding my original post. You seem way too focused on FF I, for some reason though, did it hurt you in some way? You didn’t even mention Megami Tensei, which is more what my original post was about. This is really my final word on the matter. Go play the MD Phantasy Star titles, those games were actually mechanically interesting for their time.
>>12516762>You seem way too focused on FF IIt's a thread about why PS is less popular than DQ or FF. DUH
>>12515152Because the towns look like Fisher Price and the music in the first few games is like nails on a chalkboard
>>12516649Games shouldn't expect players to use their imagination to cope with their lack of graphics
