what DOS games did you play on your pentium pc back in the day? starting with a favorite, Jetpack from 1993
>>12519252i played countless shareware games including jumpman (and the christmas version). i would often spend my allowance on bargain bin bullshit from kmart. those cdroms where someone would just compile tons of shareware/demos. alien poker was a favorite. i gotta say most of these games just felt off. im not even sure how to explain it but "dosjank" suffices. they just felt weird to control and all had that same kind of glowing, garish graphics.
>>12519275>all had that same kind of glowing, garish graphicsshareware titles were often made by one guy and since they were programmers instead of professional graphic designers the assets came out looking like that
Anyway, it's time for Beverly Hills Cop.
tons of shareware. played the shit out of fx fighter even though it only had 2 characters and one stage just because it looked cool.
>>12519252I had a 386DX-40 at the time, and I loved Cobra Mission. Loved so much that I preordered Dragon Knight III, and it took so long to release that it got renamed to Knights of Xentar and required a CD-ROM which I had to play on my cousin's Pentium-75. I even remember talking to the publishers at a trade show, asking about the upcoming release. For the long wait, they bundled the uncensor disc with the game. Megatech did publish some core memories for my childhood.
>>12519252Specifically on a Pentium? Not much, actually. By the time I got one in 1998 (a 200 MHz HP Pavilion) I was mostly only playing Windows games. I did play some on my 386 and my cousin's 486, though, particularly the Apogee shareware stuff, and a couple others like Prince of Persia, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, QBasic Gorillas, just to name a few.
>>12519767Correction, should say 1997. I think by the end of 1998 we had upgraded to a 466 MHz Celeron.
>>12519491never played that game but damn I heard the beverly hills cop theme song too many time in various cracks and keygens to think of anything else when I hear it
>>12520465>cracks and keygensi remember those always having very ominous music and then the name of the group like DaRk WaReZ and shit like that
Master of Magic
>>12519275I think "dosjank" is a good way of putting it.
>>12520584>this inventive takedown of sky drakes with spider websWhat's the bad news? I think you still need Node Mastery to get this to work, correct?
Half the dos games of the first half of the 90s never even ran on a pentium, it was way too fast. The 486/66 still had a turbo button to slow down the clock to make things playable, but even an early pentium 90 made dozens of games instantly unplayable with a work around. Even jazz jackrabbit from 1994 was unplayable on a pentium, as was most other shareware.Games from 1989-1994: use a 486 with turbo buttonGames from 1995 onwards: pentiumA pentium could be made to work by fucking with the bios (dsiable cache or run the clock at greatly reduced speed if there was a jumper for it). I did use slowdown software released in 1995 for my first pentium. It was like $40 but I dont remember its name, and it made more dos games playable on the pentium.Today dosbox people have far earier workarounds but on original hardware it was a serious problem.
>>12520810It may not be completely indicative, as it's emulation after all, but I've been testing a LOT of DOS games on 86Box with a Pentium 133, and a surprising amount of games have worked more or less perfectly, even a few from the early 80's made for the PC XT. Of course, it could very well be that it's because I'm mostly focusing on the high-profile and well-known games.
>>12520810then how come I played Jazz on a pentium machine back in the day just fine? in fact I don't remember having trouble running even games made for a 286 like captain comic or commander keen. checkmate atheists
>>12520857>I'm mostly focusing on the high-profile and well-known games.Wing commander 2 was one of the most successful pre-doom dos games. Give it a try on pentium 133.Even the cutscene panning was tied to clock speed, so instead of a cutscene you see a still image fly off the side of the screen and high speed and its fucked. Then you start your mision and the action plays at 5x speed.
>>12520884Oh yes, that was one of the ones I tried that didn't work because of the speed issues. I didn't say they all worked, just a surprising amount.
>>12520879Are you sure it wasnt jazz 2?Jazz 1 could still play on a very low end pentium but it had issues on clock speed:>Jazz also suffers from an unfortunate bug if you run it on a machine that is too fast. Basically upon starting the game you will get a Runtime Error 200 when using a fast CPU. This comes from a bug in the CRT unit found in Borland Pascal. Basically when calibrating a timing loop a counter overflows and causes problems. The gog version and later releases fixed this.
>>12520890Jazz1 works perfectly fine on my P133. I have heard about that bug, but IIRC it only triggers at 233 MHz or greater, and there's a patch that fixes it.
>>12520890It was definitely Jazz 1 since I had both of the games.
Based jetpack bro. I love that game.
>>12520979did you use the level editor? me and my brothers made all kinds of unfair crap to amuse ourselves
286 with 5.25" disk drive:Budokan, Flight Simulator 4, Captain Comic, Wolf 3D (with small window), Dune 2386, lots of cool games:Civilization, Castles, A-Train, Sim City, Colonization, Might & Magic 3, Monkey Island...486, even better:HoMM2, Master of Orion, World of Xeen, emulators, >>12520584 >>12519756 ...This machine I had from '99 to 2003 will remain my favorite.
>>12520775Yout own giant spiders can cast web with 0% interruption chance as it counts as a skill and not a spell. You dont ever need node mastery.
>>12521089>Master of Orionyeah I played a ton of this, it was the first turn based strategy game that I really gave a chance. the colorful graphics and cool aliens really sold it to a younger audience
>>12521167MOO2 was the last good game microprose made before they folded. It was such a perfect sequel.
bump, love these threads, a welcome respite from the usual bullshit
>>12519491Better mo'slo that shit, else you'll get an earful of this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjfuFXKeEJI

>>12522409>-Beneath a Steel Sky>-Day of the Tentaclegreat games, very little moon logic bullshit and no dead ends. day of the tentacle is a legit 5/5 and has the most competently executed remake I've ever seen>-Sam & Max Hit the Roadgreat humor all around but yeah I had to look at a guide several times to complete it. the comics are great >-Shadow of the CometI love H.P Lovecraft but what the FUCK was that photograph development puzzle? Literally no clues at all in the game and I calculated that even trying to brute force it could take 40+ hours>-Prisoner of IceI honestly liked playing it more than Comet even though Comet had better art and story since it has none of the bullshit of the first game, had no trouble finishing it without a guide. a worthy sequel as a more scifi oriented companion to Comet>-Toonstrucksadly felt a bit rushed and ends on a cliffhanger. it's funny and I did enjoy it quite a bitI also liked Teen Agent which most people know as one of the free games on GOG these days but I played it in early 2000s. great humor and I don't think it has any dead ends but some of the puzzles require clicking the same item several times before the character does what he's supposed to which is just another level of bullshit in point and click games.I have the sequel to Steel Sky in my backlog and I'm going to start playing it one of these days.
>>12521167Yeah, and the custom ship building is a cool feature. I also like how it streamlines the planet management with sliders, where late-game can become tedious in other games.I also forgot to mention X-Com when I spent dozens of hours on this one.
>>12522570it's pretty much the sweet spot between complex and simple. the game only has what, 7 screens where you manage your whole empire yet you can play the game in a whole bunch of different ways. I wonder if it would be possible to win the game through sheer diplomacy without firing a single shot
