I recently got a Timex 1500 and was so disappointed to later figure out it was just a Z81 and not a burger edition of the ZX.

Pretty damn sweet, although I always felt that half of the spectrum soul resides inside the AY chip, so I favor the 128k models

Heavily disagree, the beeper is more unique, and part of the charm of the Spectrum for me is that it was designed to be general purpose, but its games were still able to keep up with Atari and C64, computers originally designed to be game consoles. The AY chip is not only way more ubiquitous among 8-bit micros, it was clearly added to capitalize on the popularity of the Spectrum as a gaming platform.
