I want to deep dive more into gaming, in particular retro gaming, but do not really know where to start due to the scale being so huge
Relatively speaking, what are some games that are so good (not your personal favorites) that everyone sort of assumes you've played them - or are so good you should play
I plan on starting somewhere then following a director / developer studio to branch out and find new things for full context here
I basically only played nintendo shit growing up so there's probably a lot of sony and sega shit out there, or even nintendo classics

>that everyone sort of assumes you've played them - or are so good you should play
Mario, zelda, metal gear, resident evil, a fighting game here or there if you're autistic enough, if you can stomach RPGs then final fantasy chrono trigger and secret of mana

It would be easier to answer for a single genre
>>

any genre but yeah your list makes sense
guess i should try ALTTP and chrono trigger

Whatever you do, for any game series, PLAY THE ORIGINALS FIRST. Remakes should only be played AFTER playing the originals, NEVER as a replacement.
>>
>>12521723
Seconded. Don't be a fool OP, for your first experience play the real thing or play something new, no in-between fluff
>>
Any Civilization game in the 1-4 range (or Alpha Centauri if you want, that's good too)
Dance Dance Revolution if you can somehow find a local-ish business that offers the arcade experience
>>
NetHack if you can stomach it
>>

It would be easier if you first chose a console. I'd say the SNES is a good starting point if you're not used to retro mechanics.
>>
>want to deep dive

Ok. Why? Did you not like games before but are going to give it a good college try this time? Were you just not interested before? Why now? Why retro? Those are questions you should be asking yourself first of all.

Anyway the first step should be finding games in a genre you already like (sports, racing, fighting, puzzle etc) and go for those. If you start playing wild anonymous recommendations you're bound to be hit by a game someone really likes but is definitely not for everyone like the Nobunaga Series or those SNES pirate games jew YouTubers seem to like so much. Those are good games but require very specific mental spaces, so if you want to enjoy yourself as soon as possible stick to what you know and expand from there.
