>playing Metroid again, haven't beaten it since I was a kid>wandering around without a guide, eventually stumble upon the second ice beam upgrade before wave beam>brain is on autopilot, grab it without thinking>later pick up wave beam>realize what I just did after beating kraid and ridley>run back to the upgrade rooms, both ice beams gone>fuggg>have to run past the baby metroids to get to mother brain>eating damage every room because I can't dodge the hemorrhoids>barely make it through Tourian on last health tankAm I fucking retarded or did anyone else beat the game like this?
>>12522176I think Metroid is a pretty cool guy. eh kills space piretes and doesn't afraid of anything.
>>12522176>Am I fucking retardedYes>did anyone else beat the game like this?Yes. That game's been played many times by all sorts of people. Your scenario wasn't special.
>>12522180y can't metroid crawl?
does it matter?>thought you could turn beams on and off in the menu
The answer is basically: yep, that’s how NES Metroid works, and he accidentally locked himself out of Ice Beam for the rest of that run.In the original Metroid on NES, Ice Beam and Wave Beam do not stack. They are mutually exclusive, so once you pick up Wave Beam, it replaces Ice Beam. The old Beam rooms also do not stay available as re-pickups, which is why he went back and found both Ice Beam rooms empty. That means his complaint is real:Grabbing the second Ice Beam was fine by itself, but later taking Wave Beam overwrote it, and without Ice Beam, the Metroids in Tourian can’t be frozen, which makes the Mother Brain approach much nastier. The Ice Beam is the standard way to deal with those Metroids. So the verdict is:He didn’t softlock the game, but he did “build-order grief” himself. He made Tourian much harder by taking Wave Beam after Ice Beam, and there was no normal way to undo that in the NES version. The funny/mean old-school answer would be:>That’s not a bug, that’s NES Metroid being a bastard.Or more plainly:>In NES Metroid, Wave Beam replaces Ice Beam permanently for that run, so once you grabbed Wave, you were stuck doing Tourian the hard way.
oh crap could see that happening
