I beat the main quest of Lunar 2 again after many years and it still held up every step of the way as one of the best balanced Jrpgs of the era. Dungeons are usually pretty big and have nasty enemies that will test your resources and telegraph which moves they are going to use with their animations so you need to plan which ones to take out first. Exploring each area to get all the loot levels you up just enough that the boss is usually a decent challenge but beatable. That's perfection in my books.

I think the remake is criminally bad compared to the original with much smaller dungeons, no enemies on the world map and a bunch of minor little details like doors just disappearing when you go through them instead of having an opening animation.

If you played the remake and liked it I highly recommend checking out the original, roms are easy to find and they will never release this version again. But even still feel free to share thoughts on whichever version or anything else Lunar related.

Pic is from my fight with Zophar, easier than the first time because I knew what I was in for but still a satisfying battle.

That shader looks like shit.
>>
>>12523029
It's not a shader, just the game being played onna PSP. The PSP screen is kinda shit, but it's a convenient emulation device.

Sega CD>Saturn>Ps1

I got the switch remaster, did I do good?

>one of the best balanced Jrpgs of the era.

Well then make sure you show everybody the final boss or whatever in your threat on it so that they won't get to be surprised at all if they play that far themselves

I thought Lunar had constant dimishing returns remakes up to the 2020s.
It seems to be a tradition to constantly remove content, shrink dungeons and remove scenes in a new remake every few years.
>>
>>12525375
Then I guess I (>>12525139) did NOT go good after all...
Is the remaster that terrible?
>>
>>12523025
Wasn't Lunar completely fucked over by Working Designs? I'd love to try these games but I don't want to deal with their faggotry. Do the Unworked Design hacks fix these? Is the translation THAT bad?
>>
>>12525065
Accurate for both games.
>>
>>12526282
It's actually not that bad no matter what the weabs say. There are the few pop culture references that everyone cites but that's only like 0.0002% of text in the whole game. The characters have personality and are distinct and believable in their own ways. That's all you need in an RPG like this.

What's the best version of 1 and 2?

You guys have got to stop telling people how to enjoy the games they play

For some unknown reason, I associated it with being a Lufia counterpart for the MegaDrive.
>>
>>12525459
It's based on the PS1/Saturn remake, it's still a good game but I personally prefer the original.
>>
>>12523025
Funny thing about this fight, because all the body parts have 10000 HP, there is no reason to attack the hands since by the time you kill one you could've just killed his head.

If I’m gonna play any version of it, it’s gonna be the PS1 version since that’s the one I would’ve played growing up if I’d gotten the chance.

It's mostly that the PSP screen isn't all that great to start with so almost any photo looks shitty. It looks fine in real life though which is what matters and way better than the old tube TV I played it on originally.

>>12525459
It probably depends what you like, they are both good games, the story is about the same but the remake is very different in terms of gameplay and it's weirdly lazy which I found very off putting. I would say if you just want the story then the remake is much more condensed so you might like that more, but if you play jrpgs for the exploration and dungeons the original is far better.

Illusion Woods is my prime example. In the remake it's half a dozen screens of a boring looking linear hedge maze that doesn't even look like a forest. And there's no illusions to the illusion woods, just some bushes that a guy moved to block the path.
https://wolfgangarchive.com/sites/Lunar-2-Eternal-Blue-Complete/dungeon7.htm

In the original, the Illusion Woods is forest of big trees with illusory doors that lead to an underground network of tunnels. It's three times bigger and far more fun to explore. And there are a host of minor details missing in the remake. Bars has their own music when you went into them and every door has a little opening animation when you go through them. The town in pic related has these big plant pods that are used as the base for windmills. In the remake they're generic and the town is just recycled assets from earlier ones.

>>12526282
They mostly upped the difficulty, but I think the changes they made were good. You never have to grind but enemies and bosses are consistently nasty and keep you on your toes.

>>12525328
It's really not a spoiler, you know from the first scene who the big baddie is. He's not the final boss though, that comes in the epiloge which I won't spoil for you.
>>
>>12526967
Thanks for the in-detail explanation. I guess I'll play what I bought and if I happen to like it I might look for the original.
>>
Are the Lunar similar to Grandia ?

That's one of my favorite J-RPG
>>
>>12526967
Genesis games look great on the PSP screen but you have to enable bilinear filtering, which it looks like you have disabled. I normally disable it when playing on a full size screen but the PSP is a special case where it actually looks better and closer to the original on a CRT.
>>
Say what you want about WD, but the english opening theme for the Sega CD original is FIRE
>>
>>12527449
Yeah I just dislike bilinear filtering is pretty much every case and will always take sharp pixels even if they are a little jaggy. I hate CRTs though and never liked the way games look on them so never use filters to make it look more like that.

>>12526998
I would say play the one you have and if you enjoy it and want more of a game then check out the original. It's still pretty easy to find online and just about anything will emulate Sega CD now so it shouldn't be hard to get going.
>>
>>12527073
Nah, though characters move in battle and some abilities are AOE in Eternal Blue onwards, it's turn-based rather than real time.

>>12527459
The English versions of the songs are all brilliant too.
>>
>>12527073
My biggest gripe with Grandia is that the game is supposedly all about the thrill of being an adventurer exploring ancient ruins and whatnot but then all the dungeons are tiny and linear.
