Sonic was designed for composite video. Neo Geo games were designed for arcade monitors. You're comparing apples to oranges. CRT's have a curvature to the screen, a grill effect, and there is some natural smoothing/blur to the picture due to how CRT's work. These things are true both for arcade games and home consoles.

yeah, that looks better raw, without shitty lines. the bottom image is exactly the same, except that the right has better colors and a crisper image (not blurry). the top ALMOST looks better on the left and you can ALMOST argue that the left has more detail, but then you zoom out a little bit and it becomes immediately clear that the right is better and left is once again stupid burry lines.

This is correct. It only works on NTSC because it's got lower bandwidth/resolution or some shit. I can't remember the exact technical reason behind it but the point is us PALfags never saw the transparent Sonic 1 waterfall, which I'm convinced was a happy accident in the first place rather than a deliberate decision. How the fuck else were you supposed to see Sonic through it if not making it striped or dithered? In Sonic 2 the striped dithering looks much more deliberate though as it's used in multiple places for different effects.

The dungeons in Zelda have a small layer of bricks around the edge that are meant to account for the shape of the TV frame. You can see it really well here.
