This guy was a pixel artist at SNK making Neo Geo games and he says you should use a CRT filter for retro games.
He's right and left does look better and as intended by the artists, but CRT filters make my eyes hurt.
I just want to play the game
>>12526119I played without filters up until last year and only started using them because it makes the 5 games I've been emulating on repeat for the last 20 years feel a little different.
>>12526119>>12526120>Even the Neo Geo guy agrees composite so betterHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHARGB FAGGOTS BTFOYPBPR FAGGOTS BTFO
Am I doing it right?
>>12526120> not a flat one eitherWhy not?
>>12526160CRT's had curved displays. Flat panels became a thing at the end of the CRT era but these old games weren't developed with those in mind.
>>12526143S-Video chads will forever keep winning. Best of both worlds
>>12526185If you don't play over RF you didn't beat the game.
>>12526119>the left on is clearly better, dont you think?lmao fuck no. you can see everything that you need to see on the right just fine and with better color and clarity. screens and lines are ugly and stupid. just play at the proper zoom/resolution and raw will always be best. people that think the blurred bullshit looks better are the same kind of people that think somebody clothed is sexier than somebody naked and showing the goods.
>>12526209I'm not sure I agree with the whole sentiment but I'm more or less in the same camp. I've used CRT filters with some games and I do feel like it does change the experience. "Woooow, I've never seen the game like this."But that feeling fades and then I feel like I'm larping.
>>12526209>>12526217Imagine saying that in response to an actual professional who created some of the most beautiful pixel art of the retro era
>>12526226Maybe if they do a rerelease of the game, maybe they shouldn't include an option to disable the filter if it's the "true experience"
James cameron outs an ai filter over all his old films and says its better
>>12526226It’s an opinion - he even states it as a question>don’t you think?Right is clearly better, looking sharp. Then here >>12526120 he starts larping off about cars. Peak trash post.Opinion disregarded.X screenshot reposting for drama is almost as bad as Reddit screenshot reposting. I don’t even want to check if this was already in Reddit because I am not a loser like OP.
>>12526231The original developers aren't the ones who make those collections you big dumb gorilla
>>12526238Log off, zoomy
>>12526243Not my problem
>>12526121>CRT filters make my eyes hurt.your face is too close to the screen probablyeven back then people were warned against being too close to their television sets
>>12526119the artist is inherently biased and can't be trustedwho is he to decide how it's supposed to look?
>>12526162>but these old games weren't developed with those in mindIs it documented somewhere? Or is it just a general assumption?
>>12526119back then I played them in a tiny, lousy crt in the kitchen, via rf, with tons of interference, the light glaring on 2/3rds of the screen, my grandmother cooking while listening to the radioI want to replicate THAT experience. that's retro for me
>>12526119>SNKAren't NeoGeo MVS games displayed with super sharp RGB high quality displays???
>>12526120chad neogeo employee>>12526514display is high quality but the effect is the same due to how crt works. it's a cool trick been used for decades.
>>12526567>the effect is the same due to how crt worksNo it isn't, zoomieAn RGB signal don't blend pixels like compositeThe traditional Sonic waterfall doesn't become transparent without a blurry composite signal
>>12526374Yes, it's documented on the game box and title screen where it says the year or release, which predates the existence of flat screen TV's you fucking retard.
>>12526573Sonic was designed for composite video. Neo Geo games were designed for arcade monitors. You're comparing apples to oranges. CRT's have a curvature to the screen, a grill effect, and there is some natural smoothing/blur to the picture due to how CRT's work. These things are true both for arcade games and home consoles.
>>12526573>The traditional Sonic waterfall doesn't become transparent without a blurry composite signalEven using an RF cable I don't remember the waterfall being transparent on PAL which makes me wonder if it needed NTSC.
>>12526596Neither the documentation nor the title screen tells you that a game was designed specifically for curved TVs.
>>12526643FLAT SCREEN TELEVISIONS DIDN'T EXIST YET YOU FUCKING RETARD
>>12526119Now look at the thumbnail.
>>12526217>I feel like I'm larping.thats because crt filters are for pretentious autists. its performative nonsense.>>12526226>some of the most beautiful pixel art of the retro erayeah, that looks better raw, without shitty lines. the bottom image is exactly the same, except that the right has better colors and a crisper image (not blurry). the top ALMOST looks better on the left and you can ALMOST argue that the left has more detail, but then you zoom out a little bit and it becomes immediately clear that the right is better and left is once again stupid burry lines.
>>12526656They did. And even if they didn't it doesn't mean that devs did anything specific because of the curvature.
>>12526119>>12526120Based! anti-shader posters will never recover.
The guy who invented the gif file format says it's pronounced "jif", doesn't mean I'm gonna listen to em
>>12526608Yeah artifacting works differently with PAL and NTSC. It's the same reason that the Apple II has color in America and is monochrome in Europe.
>>12526924>i choose to be deliberately ignorant
>>12526143Neo Geo predominantly used RGBHV, genius
>>12526608This is correct. It only works on NTSC because it's got lower bandwidth/resolution or some shit. I can't remember the exact technical reason behind it but the point is us PALfags never saw the transparent Sonic 1 waterfall, which I'm convinced was a happy accident in the first place rather than a deliberate decision. How the fuck else were you supposed to see Sonic through it if not making it striped or dithered? In Sonic 2 the striped dithering looks much more deliberate though as it's used in multiple places for different effects.
>>12526758>it doesn't mean that devs did anything specific because of the curvature. The dungeons in Zelda have a small layer of bricks around the edge that are meant to account for the shape of the TV frame. You can see it really well here.
>>12527461That's because arcade cabinets all used recycled components, ie they had no choice but to use existing RGB setups.
>>12526185Neo Geo didn't have s-video.
>>12526573The Neo Geo doesn't have any transparency effects like Sonic. Instead, it mimics the effect by alternating frames.
>>12526596el oh el
