Was Doom considered a scary game when it was new?
>>
yes
>>
>>12527123
Generally yes, many people had their first true DOS-ROM scares when trying to solve the third board and entering the key card room that goes dark.
>>
>>12527123
It scared me when I was like 5-ish
>>
>>12527123

It was pretty eerie - really cool experience.
>>
IMO, Heretic was scarier.
And no Doom or Heretic could scare me as much as Ecstatica.
>>
>>12527123
this along with night trap and mortal kombat were some of the front runners in causing moral panic amongst boomers and led to the age rating system
the shouts from the same pearl clutchers got louder when it was revealed that one of the columbine shooters made custom doom levels resembling the school
>>
>>12527123
Absolutely yes, especially because average people were far more superstitious and genuinely religious at the time of release. And you didn't know the creators were just a bunch of geeks.
>>
I would go as far as to say that when it was released Doom was the most "evil" feeling video game made up to that point, with maybe some competition from some of the obscure Japanese PC visual novels that could be quite gory and taboo.
>>
>>12527123
As a 2nd grader, yes
>>
>>12527173
The first two mortal kombats are genuinely pretty disturbing because they’re weren’t as tongue in cheek as the later games. The sound design is very intense, and something about a brutal fight in front of an audience of monks to a drum beat makes it feel very ritualistic, and the unecessary fatality moves that sometimes occur genuinely feel like scary, senseless violence.

As a kid I just had fun with it and didnt think too much about it, but the setting pretty horrifying from the perspective of the heroes, especially 2.
>>
>>12527123
I can't conceive how anyone could possibly consider doom scary.
>>
>>12527123
It depends on the version and its ost
PS1 version has a horror themed ost
>>
>>12527664
That's not good bro. You should be able to conceive of that idea pretty easily.
Maybe practice some critical thinking exercises.

The sounds were pretty scary. The hissing, the growling, the stomping.
>>
>>12527680
The caco's hiss is just nasty, I always get unnerved when I hear it.
>>
>>12527123
I played Doom in kindergarten and found it funny and not scary at all but the strange thing was I got very scared of much tamer games. I'm not really sure what was going on with me.
>>
>>12527123
Yes. You have to remember when the game first came out the WASD circle strafe control scheme wasn't widely adopted yet and most computers ran it at a pretty choppy framerate, making for a slower, more deliberate experience.
>>
>>12527123
Hell yea. I remember playing it back in 1993 and it was insane, an actual 3D graphic game set in a very odd weird setting
>>
>>12527123
The first one was kinda eerie. Second was just a hand map with a booger on it.
>>
>>12527123
I thought the revenants were absolutely horrifying. The low amount of frames gave them some stop motion feel that looked unnerving to my young mind
>>
>>12527123
Yes this and Quake used to give me some kino nightmares as a kid.

I was born 1991 and Doom was silly as shit to me. I guess in some way some really young kid could've been spooked by it. It was too bright and colorful for me to be effected. Duke 3D was scarier with its moody lighting and the distant pig noises.

I will say I rented and played Doom 64 and it spooked the fuck out of me, but it's basically the real Doom 3.
>>
i thought doom was slow and tense when I first played it. now that im older and I see everyone just flies around with always run on the game loses some of its aesthetic appeal. still a great game tho
>>
>>12528089

They were the most scary enemy - their scream was quite the "wake up call".

The Plutonia Experiment with the community made soundtrack is pure kino.
>>
>>12527123
>scary game
no. i was like 10 yrs old when i first played it. if you're scared of it, you're a bigger pussy than a short kid with a pot belly.
>>
>>12529237
Wow bro youre so cool and alpha for having the brain cells of a demented 90 year old at 10, congratulations.
>>
>>12527140
>DOS-ROM

Nigger stop
>>
>>12527123
At the time, yes. Doom 1 absolutely had its moments that were intended to be scary, too, such as the blue key room in e1m3.
It may not hold up in being scary nowadays, but thats largely because it was still primarily designed as an action game, modern source ports have "always run" as an ingame toggle instead of as a config glitch. and the Horror genre in games would grow bigger and raise the bar in what is scary overtime.
>>
>>12527672
but I did have breakfast this morning
>>
Doom 1/2 being horror games is Doom 3 revisionism, this shit was action through and through. You'd have to be scared of anything to be scared of these games.
>>
>>12530434
>News has now broken from Carmack that id will be making a new Doom game. What do you think id have to concentrate on to make 'Doom3' succeed?

>JR: Keep it scary.
