Rondo's level design is abhorrent, its artstyle garish, its alternative routes feel borderline unfinished and are a huge step down in quality compared to the already mediocre level design, the bridge section as Richter is the worst section in any CV game, there are multiple long, extremely corny unskippable cutscenes, bosses are sloppy and underwhelming, subweapon balance is terrible and the best subweapons are way too strong (die once on a boss and now it's 5x harder without your subweapon), the extended whip attack is janky and awkward as fuck but many bosses feel balanced around it, the game is plagued with slowdown (especially the Death fight), and it was clearly rushed and never tested as there is a literal missing background that was somehow never noticed or fixed, pic related (as if the absolutely rancid alternative routes wouldn't already clue you into that)

It was originally glazed by collectorfags just because so few people played it compared to the NES/SNES entries, and they wanted to seem like part of some exclusive club who has played this niche JP exclusive game, so they acted like it was way better than it really was (similar with most hidden """gems"""). Now it's sucked off by retarded poser redditfags who have never played another CV game and blow through it on emulator spamming rewind constantly and hail it as a masterpiece because they want to try to fit in.

The alternative routes are awesome

The cutscenes are like 30 seconds long

If you die on a boss you go back to the room before where there's always a subweapon and a few hearts

I don't even use the extended whip attack and the boss fights are extremely manageable

The bridge is bullshit but you can just use Maria if it filters you and it's doable with Ricther I've done it a dozen times git gud

You can only think it's the worst if you've never played the first Game Boy CV. That being said, it is kind of overrated. It's not a bad game by any means, but 1 and 3 still blow it out of the water, and I would argue IV does as well. Richter is much more agile than his descendants, but the levels aren't really designed around his moveset for whatever reason, so it feels weird. It's still good, though. I'm tired of this mentality that a game is either the greatest thing ever or the most worthless piece of dogshit on Earth.

Rondo has the best art in the series, the music is second only to SoTN, and the boss fights are the most satifsying out of the 16-bit games. Otoh, it has garbage platforming, unremarkable level design, and it's short. The alt route and bonus character are nice ideas but the implementation is half-baked. A solid entry in the series overall, I'd put it ahead of Bloodlines and SCIV, but it falls short of the 8-bit classicvanias.
