Will we ever get anything on the same level as Genesis vs. SNES ever again? Despite their differences, gaming would never be the same without either of them (perfectly said by the AVGN) but who is going to care for anything after like the Xbox or Playstation? It just never had that massive cultural impact like Sega and Nintendo did, the constant buzzword terms kids didn't understand to use as ammunition to defend their favorite console like blast processing or "bits" as a few examples. That kind of soul and beauty is long gone, I don't see it ever coming back.

Asha Sharma is making moves to pivot Xbox back into developing console exclusives. The Console Wars are back, trust the process.

Definitely not, although this is not really a retro discussion to begin with. But I'll bite.
I am also in my 20s, but I noticed that the console wars mainly came in an era where companies who made video games actually cared about video games. The only ones who still do are Nintendo and Valve, which is why Nintendo still has exclusives and why Valve is still making Steam a worthy platform to be on.
The current Microsoft and Sony don't care about video games, and as much as I'd love to see SEGA hop back into the console market, I strongly doubt they will, and their engineering capability is pretty ass compared to what it once was and they are still led by the same stuck-up idiots that led to SEGA's console lineup dying and failing.
Microsoft used to care about games when Peter Moore was the guy leading the charge and actually knew what he was doing. Sony used to care about games when the guys leading it were Japanese guys who cared about hardware and exclusives instead of shitty gimmicks. By the time Sony moved to California it was over, and by the time Peter Moore was out, Xbox went to shit.
And right now, both Microsoft and Sony went all-hands-on-deck on whoring out their IPs to PC and other platforms, and with the current RAM and manufacturing shortage (which will probably get MUCH worse once China inevitably invades Taiwan) it's highly unlikely that a new console manufacturer will step up to take anyone's place or to create any competition.
Technology is changing and unfortunately Console Wars and the rival fights of competing consoles is a thing of the past

Millennials will not like it but PS3/Xbox 360 war was more fierce

name one (1) thing that would be different about video games if the genesis had not existed

despite what those with terminal zoomer derangement syndrome will say, 7th generation was still very much a milliennial-focused one. in fact as someone that's 36 my 360 is the only console i still physically have with me. been toting it around since end of college.

the saturn also wouldn't have existed thus sparing us of all saturnspam LOL

I'm gunna be honest, in reality this was just Nintendo vs a big slop of shit and its good that marketing like this is gone. Like there is not a single genesis game I'd ever go back and replay.

The early 90s consolewar is greatly exagerated by modern youtubers. It was there more as a background ad campaign, mainly in magazine ads and the odd commercial on saturday mornings. No one back then took it seriously and day-to-day no one gave it any thought. I really only ever saw my first consolewar argument in real life in around 1998 on IRC where two retards started arguing over sega vs nintendo. That was the first time in my life I found people could be serious enough about game consoles to argue about them.

I was already in highschool when the SNES landed. People didnt really talk about console gaming in public at all, unless it was sports titles, it was still an era where Geek culture was shameful to normies.

If the topic ever did come up, there were no delusions over which console was superior in terms of hardware, it was simply the console most of us owned when madden landed (Genesis). That was really all that mattered. There was no war outside the pages of the magazines.

documenting it != exaggerating it. OP already admitted to being a zoom-zoom and probably spends an inordinate amount of time here breathing in all the console war threads and taking them seriously. 4chan more than anything is the one exaggerating it.

other than that i agree with your post wholeheartedly.

It just wasnt the same

I'm also in my 20s and I have a slightly different opinion on this.

Many people have a fond memory of "console wars" but looking at it through 2026 lenses it was pretty much a "consoomer" battle, and the funny part is that it was mostly marketed towards children. 90s adults who liked games could just buy both systems, but kids couldn't so it was a marketing strategy so kids begged their parents to buy either Nintendo or Sega.

I moved away from consoles after the Xbox 360 and I never went back, PC is the way to go for me
>>
>>12528186
360 vs ps3 was the closest we got but then pc came along and stole almost every exclusive from both consoles and in return shrinking both consoles relevant library. I remember everyone losing their shit when FF13 was gonna come to 360

The only way it will happen is if it's an entirely different frontier, like mass market AR/VR or smell-O-vision or whatever the fuck. Indies put their games out on every platform possible and big boy devs are doing the same thing now because of Xbox-hueg budgets. You can't have a console war in this environment. Nintendo is the outlier, now and forever.
