>non-stop 4th wall breaks and pop-culture references Wow, this feels a lot jarring after beating the first game.
The first game is desolate, but secretly a little hopeful. The second is depraved and overtly nihilistic. Two different styles that complement one another well.
>>12528465You are too young to catch the pop culture references anyway
>>12528483only 80s kids remember star wars and terminator
>>12528486Yep only they seen the unedited version.
>>12528486Well there's a Pinky & The Brain and Godfather reference Plus Scientologists. Who makes fun of those guys anymore?
>>12528481I'm aware that Fallout 2 was made with short development cycle while Tim Cain and other lead designer left during mid production. But damn, it really shows that devs were struggling to make new ideas and just add bunch of inside jokes to expend the game resulting an inconsistent writing and tone.>>12528483No wonder it mostly appeals to millennial.
Fallout 1 is practically a visual novel with how little role playing you can actually do itt. guy who has modded FO1Fallout 2, outside of purely technical stuff like when it was made holding it back, is still one banger of an RPG, which I can't say the same about FO1. The LA Boneyard is unfinished trash and your stats are barely used in the roleplaying.
>>12528504Fair point, but I feel like the second game miss the whole point of bleak tone.Talking mole rats, plant and intelligent deathclaws/radscorpion really bothered me for some reason.
>>12528527>>Talking mole rats, plant and intelligent deathclaws/radscorpion really bothered me for some reason.Maybe they did it ONE too many times -- but you gotta think about it from perspective of clever asset usage.>We made this killer plant enemy>Why not make a friendly one the player can talk to?
>>12528557It's a blatant Little Shop of Horrors reference. It would have been fine as a random encounter, but putting that quest where you test your intelligence against radscorpion in a mutant/ghoul town dealing with cave mining and murder mystery issues really pissed me off.
>>12528481>The second is depraved and overtly nihilisticIt literally shows society recovering. You're talking about Bethesda's Fallout games.
They clearly didn't want to make this game and were pressured by Interplay, so they did whatever they found funny at the time. Even the original creators weren't involved with the sequel.
It's hard to even get mad at the pop culture jokes when I'm too busy dying to random encounters on the first move...basically if you don't get the highwayman before exploring South you're fucked if you try to crawl back North.
>>12528661it's recovering into a bunch of corrupt shitholes lead by the self interested, scheming and fucking with each otherthere aren't really any virtuous groups in the game
>>12528465It does have too many references which can become a nagging nuisance that I can agree with. For the most part they do not interfere with the game and a small group people make it into a much bigger deal than it really is.It is also a direct upgrade gameplay-wise from Fo1 in every way. It also has some incredible atmosphere in many of its areas and I wish people didn't overlook this whenever the "dark" mood of Fo1 gets brought up.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzMHvvBqVuYFo2 is a much bigger game with some of its puzzle pieces not fitting together as well, I wish we didn't have to argue over which game is worse/better because both of them were good enough for me to keep replaying for two decades now and still find reasons to return.
>>12528686>into a bunch of corrupt shitholes lead by the self interested, scheming and fucking with each otherAre we still talking about Fallout?
>>12528504You're a modder, has anyone made a mod/hack for the first two games so that I can just left click on hostiles to attack them, and left click on containers, dead bodies, and items, so that I can I just open/pick them up, without having to use a dropdown menu like I'm using editing software? This was something Baldur's Gate did a million times better, and why I never bothered getting into the old Fallouts back in the day.
>>12528705I mean, there's a quest where Mr,Bishop wants you to deal with NCR to annexed New Reno. While Vault City deals with racism and glorified slavery. To be honest, morally grey narrative wasn't properly fleshed out in 2 until New Vegas.
>>12528483Ths. He only knows there are pop culture references because that's a meme he heard about. You can tell this because he missed all the references in Fallout 1.
>>12528828>You can tell this because he missed all the references in Fallout 1.Most of them appear as random encounters tho unlike 2.
>>12528465I don't care I like the second game more because it makes fo1 nerds look stupid. People jerk off the master way too much they think they're super geniuses because they figured out how to beat him with dialog choices even though the type of player to talk to everyone is usually the type of person to play these games anyways. You're not clever because you figured out the supermutants are infertile. Meanwhile main man frank can't be talked down sure you can convince some enclave guys to help you out but the main guy himself can't be talked out. Fo2 is based for that alone it's a beautiful reality check.
>>12528465Redditout 2
>>12528465>non stop Haven’t played it but still commenting on it, huh? Can you not do this crap on /v/ where it’s tolerated if not encouraged?
>>12528465Don't you guys get bored of having this conversation?
>>12528491wow truly masterful and epic references. millennials are pathetic.
>>12528838Wrong, you just don't know them. The whole setting is built on references.
>>12529463it's the only thing they know about fallout 2
>zoomers throwing a tantrum about muhleenials in a thread about a game written in '98Are you guys ok?
>>12529463>Don't you guys get bored of having this conversation?/vr/ in a nutshell
I never really liked how difficult they made getting a gun at the start of the game. FO1 gave you a pistol or laser pistol depending on your tagged skills, but I think the earliest not-pipe-gun you get 2 is in the Klamath caves with the rat god.Even if you didnt tag the combat skills in FO1, you could quickly learn where junktown and the hub were and go there to get a gun before you got into many fights.
>>12530815Don't you know? Millennials were writing video games in their K-12 classes.
>>12530836>FO1 gave you a pistol>laser pistolwrongIn 2, you get a free Pipe Rifle in Vic's Shack and free 10mm in the Rat Caves.
>>12530868Trufax. I was only 6 years old at the time, but I was in fact the secret lead writer for Fallout 2. Mark O'Green is just a made up name and person, he doesn't actually exist.
>>12530735fallout 1 references:>dogmeat notices your leather jacket and wants to join you fallout 2 references:>"this reminds of that time darth vader went back to the future and fought tom cruise!"
I like the atmosphere of 2 more than 1 desu
>>12530950The leather jacket design is a Mad Max reference.
>>12530950you kids only trust ai, right?
>>12528465I think people forget this, but that's what nerd humor was like back then. It was extremely referential, look at stuff like MST3k which is where basically half of older millenial e-celebs get their sense of humor from (the other half got it from quoting Monty Python and the Holy Grail endlessly). It only feels so grating because either you didn't grow up in that culture, or you eventually got sick of it over the decades.
>>12530950Why do zoomers just pretend?
would you say you prefer the Pulse Rifle or the Turbo Plasma Rifle
>>12528465Some of the humor was kinda shitty but still a tremendously addicting game.
>>12530684Too bad zoomers are even worse and cringy. Careful now, that empty room is scary!!!
>>12530957Yes, I believe the poster you're replying to is aware of that. The point is that the style of referencing in the games is quite different.
>>12529160Frank scared me more than the Master, because the master is at least somewhat rational while frank is just an extremely loyal mutant brute who can't be reasoned with.
>>12531806I like how his inability to be talked down is foreshadowed in the infamous tutorial.
>>12531810I never struggled with that tutorial probably because I played Fallout 1 first before 2 as was intended, never understood the hatred for it despite it holding you back from beginning the actual game for about 15 minutes.
>>12531818Back then, I was doing so many FO2 runs, when the mapper was finally leaked, I actually went into the starting map and deleted some trees so you could leave early.
>>12531806Frank was as hilarious as he was cool. Great final boss. Not as interesting as the Master but he fit the edgy / overdone nature of Part2.
>>12530965I'm 45 and I know almost all of those. I still remember Fallout 2 as the annoying game overly loaded with references and Fallout as the good one. Fallout 2's presentation of Hubology is unforgivable.
