>NES's full-up US launch in late '86 features two wrestling games, this and M.U.S.C.L.E.
>followed in a few months by Pro Wrestling
Really, Howard Phillips? All the much more interesting Famicom titles that could have been localized instead when just one wrestling game would have been all anyone needed.

a huge amount of those were barely playable kusoge
We pretty much did get every worthwhile 85-86 Famicom game at some point, most of what they left in Japan was left there for a reason. You want this thing instead of TTW?

they were really trying to pander to the normie sports jock audience, weren't they?

Wrestling was the biggest thing in the universe in 1986, especially for kids, so wrestling games were an extremely high priority.

M.U.S.C.L.E. often gets clowned on but I prefer it over Tag Team Wrestling because the latter has some really ugly audiovisuals and generally has less character to it. Pretty sure the main gimmick of TTW was the speech samples, which use up half the ROM.

I think all of the OP games were huge Famicom sellers (Kinnikuman/M.U.S.C.L.E. was a million seller) so Japanese kids were also hugely into it.

>M.U.S.C.L.E. often gets clowned on
its main sin is just being an early NROM title that looks Colecovision-like and not as polished as games from the peak NES years of 88-91

I probably put 250+ hours in Pro Wrestling at my friend's house back in the day. Just thinking about it has embedded the music in my head even though I haven't heard it in forever.

This. We played whatever wrestling games we could get a hold of.

I used to watch that show but it's so strange now to see cartoonized versions of these grizzled old bastards who all did some of the most vile and sordid things you could imagine irl.

The Kinnikuman manga series was huge in Japan, they tried issuing it in the US in the early 2000s and nobody noticed (also by then they had made Brocken Jr. no longer a Nazi).
