There are good JRPGs but it's like finding a diamond in a garbage dump. And even with the "good" ones there are going to be X factors that determine whether you personally will like them or not, so the genre isn't anywhere near as accessible as platformers for example. If a platformer is good most platform players will probably think it's good, simple as. Not so with RPGs. Out of the hundred or so RPGs I've completed, I could only really list 3 or 4 that are actually good according to my tastes.

Same goes for FF7 and the vast majority of 32-bit JRPGs, which became increasingly soulless as the life of the system went on. I don't rate any JRPGs from PS2 era or later above a 5/10, and FFX felt especially by-the-numbers to me.
