As far as other forms of collecting, look no further than the current Pokemon card scene that was propped up by online eFaces that forced a lot of long time collectors/players out despite being passionate about it long after the initial interest had faded (much like how retro games were). You basically had enough to go around for everyone into the hobby to get at their leisure, but those options very quickly evaporated due to fads and resellers who observed this.
