Just bought a Game Gear, and it's without a doubt way better than the Game Boy.
>>12530572Imagine if Pokemon was on this instead
>>12530572No you didn’tAnd no it definitely isn’t
>>12530583DidIt is
Shame about the lack of games.
>>12530572Did ya remember to replace the capacitors?
game boy is green and black with ms dos graphicsgame gear is basically a handheld genesisanyone who says game boy is better is not telling the truth
>>12530671>handled genesisthat would be picrel, the Sega Nomad.Game Gear is a portable Master System but indeed better than a Game Boy.You had to use a portable rechargeable battery if you wanted to play for long sessions, but it was worth it just to play Sanic. also had an adapter for Master System cartridges
>>12530582I was a Game Gear kid and then later got a Game Boy Color when Pokemania hit the U.S. in 1998. Best of both worlds. I never felt like I missed out on all that much by not having an original Game Boy.
>>12530572nah you didn'tcool auster thread tho
>>12530775I thought 'auster' hated Sega. It’s definitely not just one guy.
>>12530779he larps as segafag to shit on nintendo
>>12530802Okay, but all the Saturn hate threads are also attributed to auster.
>>12530814He hates the Saturn for some reason (he came up with shitturn and all the bernie stolar posts).Dude's weird.
For me it's Shinobi 1 and 2 and Shining Force Gaiden
>>12530572It eats up batteries like a motherfucker and has almost no good games
>>12530779no, auster, it's just you
>>12530831Back then cars had cigarette lighters all over them and stores sold cheap adapters and rechargeable batteries and stuff everywhere. Unless you were a rich kid, odds are your parents weren't even going to keep giving you enough AA's for GameBoy. Playing things plugged in or a battery pack was just basically standard for handheld systems. Also, nowadays if you want to play mortal Kombat or some shit you can just play whatever version you want but back then having Lion King, NBA Jam and all these games that might have better home console versions was awesome. GG still does have plenty of fun exclusive games on it where it might not be the number one system, but you can still have a good time with it these days though too
>>12530843I’m >>12530765
>>12530572I disagree, it took more batteries and they lasted way less, also the Game Boy library simply had more to it... I'm mainly a SEGA fan though and I do find the Game Gear underrated, most of the criticisms are fair, but most people usually let these flaws stop them from looking into the library, and in the end we have a good library with titles that look and feel near 16-Bit.
>>12530572I love the Game Gear. It may not have ever gotten to the Gameboy's heights of popularity but it absolutely had a significant scene back in the day. It was more expensive but the idea was that it was for people who wanted something more than the Gameboy had to offer, without going fully outside the realm of affordability the way the 16 bit handhelds at the time did (Atari Lynx and Turbo Express).Something else that's easy to forget is that the Gameboy got a second lease on life because of Pokemon and then the addition of the color model later. A system that would have probably been phased out around the time of the N64's launch basically got to stride through two generations without being fully replaced which basically only happened once.I think Sega was hoping the Nomad would be the heir apparent to the Game Gear but the technology for a portable Genesis just wasn't there yet. It needed a massive battery pack, Genesis cartridges were too big for a handheld system, and kids wanted new games, not a big back library of old console games.Hypothetically speaking, the Gameboy Advance or a system a lot like it would have been ideal to drop in the mid 90s. But as said before, the popularity of Pokemon and Sega's misguided attempt at a 16 bit handheld basically meant that handhelds would be two generations behind current generation consoles until the PSP, when they finally started catching up (Nintendo would stick with their 2 generations behind model until the Switch, where market pressure forced them to make something more powerful in lieu of a new dedicated console).
>>12531027>it took more batteries and they lasted way lessBecause it had a colour, backlit screen. The Game Boy on the other hand just stole the power to make its screen usable from elsewhere. The Sun, your electricity bill or a light accessory which needed its own batteries. They'd be much closer in battery life terms if the screens were in any way comparable. Instead Nintendo took the sneaky route and hid the expense of lighting it in a way that dumb kids would never think about (nor the blinkered manchildren they became).
>>12531125I don’t think anyone was ever confused about why the Game Gear had a shorter battery life than the Game Boy. >The SunSunlight is free, negro
>>12530572I bought one sometime back in 2010~ for nostalgias sakw since i grew up with a gameboy but the 6 AA tax was too much and i cant be bothered playing plugged into a wall. May as well just emulate at that point.
>Just bought a Game Ge-*six AA batteries run out of juice*
Modern batteries last longer
>>12530582*were
>>12531693No WAS is correct.
>>12530671Bitch was heavy as shit though, specially with the batteries.
>>12531729Were is for hypotheticalsWas is for past tense absolutes
>>12531428How bad is life if you miss the experience of buying batteries?
>>12531729It's were you esl mutt
For me, it's that Sailor Moon shovelware
>>12531027>with titles that look and feel near 16-Bit.Even GBC with its arguably bigger power and impressive titles, doesn't really get that "16Bit" feel.Maybe Aleste 3 is somewhere close to this.
>>12530582pokemon sucks>>12530706why sega didn't make more of these is beyond me, especially nowadays when everything is getting turned into a handheld
>>12532158That’s because the Game Gear supports up to 15 colors per sprite, while GBC and Neo Geo Pocket Color are still limited to 3 colors per sprite. GBC has a larger master palette albeit.
>>12530765I had a Game Gear first then got a Game Boy Pocket in 1996 or 97. I didn't feel like I missed out either, I enjoyed playing Sonic Triple Trouble and stuff a ton. But objectively speaking, the Game Boy had a larger library with way more good games.
>>12530582*saves the saturn*
>>12532058It's okay
>>12531027That color scheme is so sick. Thanks for sharing.
>>12530671as you've been told 10,000 times, technical specs mean jack shit if there isn't any good games. game boy had better games than the game gear. this is indisputable. anyone who says otherwise is a faggot contrarian>>12532168>why sega didn't make more of these is beyond mebecause it sold like shit. you segatards could really use putting 10 seconds of thought into what you're writing before posting.
>>12532392it's giving aquafresh in a good way
>>12530583ThisI’ve played bothYou are lyingIt might have a few interesting games here and there for hipsters that need that kind of thing but overall it really isn’t beating the competition back then
>>12532176>That’s becauseThat's because what??? Having "near 16bit look and feel"? Master System got the same situation. Hardly 16-bit feeling games.Anyway, on GBC u can always somewhat "put together" sprites for more colors like Tomb Rider. Although there almost always this pastel look, can't really remember game on GBC looking otherwise.¯\_(ツ)_/¯>Neo Geo Pocket ColorNow that's true 16bit machine!
>>12532451Damn this tendie is seething. Sorry you had to play shitty ass Tetris instead of Dragon Crystal.
>>12530671>game boy is green and black with ms dos graphicsWhat kind of Ms-Dos graphics? EGA? CGA? VGA?>game gear is basically a handheld genesisWut? Not even close mate.
>>12532528It's actually closer to a handheld Master System, and it even fails at that considering how butchered Sonic 1 and 2 are.
>>12532669It’s a Master System with half the resolution, but its color palette is squared (Master System has 64 colors, while Game Gear has 4,096 colors), so the Game Gear has a big advantage and a big disadvantage comparatively. Games ported from the Master System didn’t make as much use of the extra colors.
>>12532503i had both and i barely touched my game gear because my parents hated all the batteries it ate up. not to mention all the sonic games were inferior (to the genesis games) trash. game boy is superior. cope seethe dilate.
>>12530671game boy is a pimp console for all them niggas with big dickniggas like me
>>12532761>my parents hated all the batteries it ate upNintendies confirmed poorcucks. Maybe try getting a job if you can't afford batteries.
>>12532721The ported games are literally unplayable. Sonic 2 has constant leaps of faith that you can't possibly see. It's garbage.
>>12531027Jurassic Park kino.
>>12532858Normalfag dipshit.
>>12532859Game Gear Jurassic Park is great.
>>12530617>Shame about the lack of games. There were roughly 240 games released in North America, which wasn't too bad given the state of Sega in the Early to mid 90's Worldwide, it has about 380-400 games. In comparison the original Black & White GameBoy has closer to like 500 or more games released for it in North America. The GameBoy was getting twice as many games, but also a lot more shovel ware.
>>12532938Ok segoy.
>>12530572Wait until you take it outside!
>>12530572sure it is, for half an hour until the batteries die, I'll be on the beach with my GameBoy Pocket this summer, hbu?
>>12532858Indeed, probably the best JP title at the time and one of the best titles on the Game Gear.
>>12530617It's entire library literally outshines the entire Nes library
Basically any complaint about the gameboy had was fixed by the pocket. TWELVE hours on just two AAA batteries? That's it? So small and lightweight it was smaller than your wallet? Crisp black and white screen with adjustable contrast so you could see it in all light conditions? And again, it played gameboy games, aka games worth playing.
>>12532451>game boy had better games than the game gear. The only truly good games on GB were Tetris, pokeymans, and Zelda. The rest were anywhere between acceptable (Mario) and shovelware. The GB's main strength came from it being cheap enough, and having long enough battery life, to act as an electronic pacifier for elementary-school-age children on long voyages. By contrast, the GG was more expensive, larger, heavier, with worse battery life.
>>12533330I didn't think it was possible to have taste this bad.
>>12532949Agreed. The screen quality sucked so much on this thing, even if you played inside in darkness, it was blurry and flickering. What is the point of supporting 4096 colors if you can't distinguish them.
>>12533762I meant the 2 hours per six pack of batteries, but that too.
