Is quality just inherent? I wasn't old enough to grow up in the SNES era, but I was old enough to grow up in the burning CDs era.And I was the guy burning SNES + every rom and handing it out to my friends in elementary. What's interesting is I never gave my friends recommendations. But for whatever reason they would stumble upon the same games I did.Chrono Trigger, E.V.O, Secret of Mana 2, Zelda, Mario, Punch Out, Donkey Kong, Super Ghouls, Dragon Ball.Even meeting people later on life, they'd all say they enjoyed those games. You didn't have to be told those games were good. You can tell within the first few minutes by the graphics, music and overall gameplay whether a game is good or not.
>>12531480They just consulted the same best games lists or sought out stuff from known IPs. Not rocket science.
>>12531480You could usually tell if a game was going to be worth it just by the title screen and intro. If they put a lot of work into those things you could be more sure they put a lot of work into the game itself. Chrono Trigger is probably actually the best example of this.
>>12531482nah they went through the roms one by one, most of them
>>12531485guy above you is pretending that my friends would be playing Super James Pond, instead of Actraiser, if they didn't have some best game list to consult. No one was looking at best game lists online in late 90's or early 2000's
>>12531486>>12531492Retard. The DBZ games are shit and would suggest that they were indeed just looking for shit they'd heard of
>>12531492it's probably more likely they saw the hype and good ratings for certain games in vidya magazines, which were giga popular in that timeframe. But also, kids had more time to sit there and try out every single game in a list of hundreds.
>>12531493Where did they hear of Actraiser, retard? They loaded it, the music was good, the gameplay was fun and it was that simple.
>>12531480Pretty much, humanity can discern quality in most cases within a specific milieu, but! Kids who grew up with Youtube telling them what to think can't relate to this, this is why they think everyone else gets their opinions there, classic projection. You have to realize that mandatory education already primes children to listen to authority for the "correct answers" and into that space swept the internet as a source of easy answers.
>>12531493Why would anyone play games based shonen slop?
>>12531480I certainly managed to find stuff organically when I was 14 and had nothing but time for going through a list of ROMs. Even before YouTube and stuff though there were still gaming forums and you could just as easily get an idea of what to play based on what gets more discussion out of people.
it's not that complicated. if you're smart or you have experience, certain small elements begin to show when browsing catalogues like that. I call it the thing speaking to you. these elements start to meld into a mix of subjective and objective. so, for example, if you have never heard of jim henson, and you are looking at prime video or something, you may have experience in the subjective taste of fantasy, or vice versa when looking at the dark crystal, but you will understand maybe that there's an objective quality to the puppetry or the fantasy scenario. of course, eye catching names help with that; so a kid that likes dinosaurs or/and cool things will of course like a game named 'e.v.o' without fully understanding the objective quality (that comes later when talking to 4chan losers or reddit)
Chrono Trigger was probably a guaranteed success in that way to be fair. They took everything they learned from years of making jrpgs and turned it into streamlined polished product. So it probably would feel good to play back then.
>>12531480>Is quality just inherent? No, all games are bad and the only reason anyone likes any given game is due to nostalgia.
>>12531480>Is quality just inherent? What the fuck is that stupid ass question supposed to mean?
>>12531480Theres a lot of near universal standards. Art style, charm, graphic fidelity, music, pacing, complexity, novelty. But there's subjective elements with thise. Preference for difficulty, for inexstyle over another, novelty vs refinement.
>>12531480>But for whatever reason they would stumble upon the same games I did. They grew up in the same world you did.
>>12531480>Dragon Ball.Besides Hyper Dimension from a pure artistic standpoint, there's not a single good SNES Dragon Ball game. But back in 2000, we were all desperate for a Dragon Ball video game so we overlooked their faults.
>>12531986The ones where you walk to the middle and then do a move or a defense are good, and the card rpg is good.
They most have had a strong enough hook so that out of hundreds of games those are the ones they stuck with. Also what you did was a crime.
>>12532207I'm gonna put complete rom sets for every retro console on an external drive and share them with any friends that want them right now and there's nothing you can do about it, you stupid fucking cop!
>>12531496Its the first game alphabetically
>>12531482>best games listsAt best you'd have some biased journo list from a magazine. There was no /v/ recommends wiki back then.
>>12531480>Is quality just inherent?Probably, I think of a game like Minnesota Fats and the quality is clear. I don't even like billiards but the presentation, sound design and gameplay all seem to align towards a vision and it's respected in every part of the game.Even an ugly game can be quality. That's why romhacks and modders are usually so disjointed and strange looking, it has an amateur quality that is so recognizably amateur.
>>12532474hes obviously a zoomer and incapable of forming his own opinions without being told what to think.
