Did people find the opening stage of SoTN confusing when it was first released considering Rondo of Blood never came to the west?
>>
>>12532229
I still find it confusing because it's the only Castlevania game I've ever played.
>>
>>12532229
I'm sure people who played (and got that far into) Dracula X appreciated the callback...or maybe it pissed them off because Dracula X sucked.
>>
>>12532229
you're asking if people were confused by a guy with a whip fighting Dracula in a series known for a guy fighting Dracula with a whip just because they only made an inferior port of Rondo available to the West?
>>
>>12532260
It's confusing that you play as some random blue guy before playing as the actual main character.
It's confusing that the blue guy you play at the beginning who kills Dracula is the final villain for no reason.
>>
>>12532259
I never thought Dracula X sucked, in fact I quite enjoyed its difficulty and awesome visuals and music back in '95
I only found out it was considered "bad" in modern times with the internet
>>
>>12532260
>tumblr
way to invalidate your argument
>>

Retard
>>

>I only found out it was considered "bad" in modern times with the internet
Many, MANY such cases.
>>
"who the fuck is this alucard guy? Why am I not playing as a Belmont"
>>
>>12532282
"I played Castlevania 3. Who is this prissy boy? He can't be Alucard!"
>>
>>12532282
You got BTFO
>>
>>12532229
Back in the day we didn't really question games. A lot of things just didn't make sense.
>>
>>12532274
we used to clown on you newfags who didn't rename their images back in the good old days, no wonder this site has gone to shit
>>
>>12532229
>defeats Dracula
>becomes the final boss
>Dracula's son kills Dracula's killer
>somehow this is a good thing
It really doesn't make any sense.
>>
>>12532298
Trust me, no one ever gave a shit if you went on Google Images, found a picture, and neglected to rename it to "MMMM I LOVE SUCKING COCKS!!! GIVE ME MORE COCK!!"
>>
>>12532298
that anon isn't me, and I never rename images unless I need it for looking up a doujin later
>>
>>12532259
the narrative that dracula X sucks is entirely the fault of hipster neckbeards comparing it to rondo purely so they can bring up the fact that they know rondo and aren't a casual.
>>
>>12532298
while true, most of us grew up, emphasis on the most
>>
>>12532339
>entirely the fault of hipster neckbeards comparing it to rondo
Why shouldn't they? Rondo is the better game which Dracula X is based on. The narrative that Dracula X sucks is also based on the fact most fans don't find it fun to play.
>>
>>12532351
yet they still somehow praise SCIV for the "atmosphere" and wiggly whip despite it being a hideous looking with plodding gameplay

If anything, the intro was there specifically because they knew people hadn't played Rondo and they needed to provide some context. It's like those "last time on" montages at the beginning of television shows that are supposed to catch people up if they missed the previous episode.

Although it was pretty fucking daft of them to drop "bloodlines" in the opening considering that was the name of another CV game but *not* the one they were referencing. Of all the titles they could have picked, maybe don't use one that's already taken by another game in the series?
>>
>>12532358
>hideous looking
literally nobody thinks this. Except maybe Auster? But it's 4AM on a Monday in Australia right now.
>>
>>12532365
It's an early SNES release, and it shows. Very drab looking by Castlevania standards. Lots of brown. Unimpressive bosses. I honestly enjoy playing the original and 3 more than IV.
>>
>>12532375
>Very drab
Oh no the gothic horror game has muted colours instead of looking like Dynamite Headdy. Anyway.
>>
>>12532282
>nearing the end of sotn
>dracula appears out of nowhere
>"Turn off the console, son!"
what did he mean by this?
>>
>>12532229
A child might be. Anyone over the age of 10 should be able to recognize this storytelling technique
>>
>>12532379
Conveniently left off the "by Castlevania" standards. It's just an ugly game. Looks more like something you'd see on an Amiga than an SNES. Dracula X is a pleasure to play and look at by comparison. Much later release, but true, nonetheless.
>>
>>12532403
>Conveniently left off the "by Castlevania" standards
That's probably because the previous games were on NES, a machine which didn't have the bit depth to do non-saturated colours.
>>
>>12532229
I was more confused by Richter's sprite having short hair while his portrait had long hair.
>>
>>12532407
Yes, but there is no such excuse for SCIV. Konami made much greater use of color with Haunted Castle, released three years prior. All the subsequent Castlevania games after SCIV did so, as well. There's no particular reason it had to look as sorry as it did.
>>
>>12532229
No. There's this little thing called a prologue.
>>
>>12532430
>there is no such excuse for SCIV
Jesus fuck, am I speaking with an LLM? There's no opportunity for an excuse in the first place because it doesn't use bright and garish NES-like colours, which you had JUST gotten done deriding Castlevania IV for. And now you are claiming that it DOES use a low bit precision?
>>
>>12532229
>people
You mean retards? Sure, you guys live in confusion.
>>
>>12532229
Everyone knew Castlevania 1's Dracula so it felt like a callback to that.
>>
>>12532235
Rondo of Blood/Dracula X are really tight and fun. Dracula's final boss fight is iconic to experience it from Rondo of Blood.

You consider the NES bright and garish? They're often just as drab, just with some orange and red here and there. The NES games are nothing to write home about, either, but they were on much more limited hardware.

>You consider the NES bright and garish?
Yes? You can literally mathematically prove that, because the bit depth is too low for muted colours.
>>
>>12532229
The confusing part was the opening stage being named "Bloodlines," the name of an existing Castlevania title that the opening has no actual connection to.

>>12532339
This and its holy grail status as a collector's item to Americans at a time when PC Engine emulation was much less accessible than the alternatives, back when Magic Engine was just about all there was and was also paywalled with a 5 minute timer. Many merely HEARD about Rondo, heard the OST, were aware of the consistently branching paths, etc. to make them believe Dracula X was an inherently gimped product without actually playing Rondo to know they're two different games. I personally find it weird that CV3 is so lauded while there's still this lingering narrative that Dracula X is bad to this day, when they're frankly pretty similar games in terms of pacing and difficulty curve.
>>
>>12532532
CV3 is way easier than Dracula X, the only problem with 3 is that the levels are too long.
>>
>>12532487
most games only used top row poo poo colors
>>
>>12532430
Huh? Haunted Castle and X68000 have a lot of brown and grey.
Fuck, CV1 also has a lot of grey and, not brown, but dark colors.
Also, it's fine if you don't like a popular game, just don't exoect your opinion to be widely accepted, it's an unpopular opinion

playing symphony as a kid it seemed to sink in that the segment was some kind of prolougue. I definitely didn't react like "is this the end of the game wtf?"

This. I remember seeing this game at blockbuster and magazines and just thought as a kid "Oh yeah this guy is the dude from the Super Nintendo game I never played" And I just put two and two together that it was the final boss from that game. Like 10 years later I played both Rondo and X and was fucking confused why the level and music were nothing like in Symphony
>>
>>12532229
Even if Rondo had been released in the west a lot of people still wouldn't have played it before SotN simply because we didn't have instant easy access to every single game that exists like we do today, or readily available databases that told you "these are all the games in this series in release order"
>>
>>12532229
I remember thinking it was just a different and cool way to start the game. Also imagine my surprise when I later played Rondo of Blood and that final boss was 1,000x more of a god damn BITCH to beat.
