>>12532352In the NES version of Super Mario Bros. 2, World 1-1 has a completely fake "secret" waterfall with two suspicious-looking stone blocks sitting right underneath it in the first cave section (next to the Ninji enemy). It looks exactly like the kind of spot where you'd expect a hidden block, vine, or item to pop out - especially since the original Super Mario Bros. trained players to smash suspicious scenery right from 1-1. But nope: those blocks do absolutely nothing. You can't break them, stand on them for anything special, or reveal a warp/coin/mushroom no matter how many times you jump, punch, or potion the area. They're pure decoration (or maybe a tiny safety net if you overshoot the vine jump to the right), designed as a deliberate red herring to mess with your expectations. This little troll is 100% exclusive to the original 1988 NES cart—later ports like Super Mario Advance "fixed" it by adding a visible 1-Up Mushroom in a bubble right on those blocks so players wouldn't feel cheated. On the NES hardware, though, it's just... there, silently watching you waste time hunting for a payoff that never comes. It's such a subtle, low-key piece of level design psychology that even dedicated speedrunners or 100% completionists often overlook it until someone points it out in a deep-dive article. Most players beat the game dozens of times and never realize 1-1 is quietly gaslighting them in the very first cave.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) literally launched Nintendo Power magazine itself. The very first issue of Nintendo's official fan magazine (Volume 1, July/August 1988) hit shelves and was mailed free to early Nintendo Fan Club members months before the game even released in October. The cover was a custom claymation diorama of Mario facing off against Wart, and the entire flagship feature was a massive 20+ page deep-dive on SMB2: full character stat breakdowns (who's fastest, who jumps highest, etc.), multi-page level maps with hidden tips, enemy guides, and "Insiders' Calendar" hype tying the game directly to the magazine's launch.Nintendo basically used SMB2 as the entire hook to sell subscriptions and build excitement for their new publication - something that feels wildly meta now. Issue #2 even continued the coverage with more warp zone details and character comparisons. This wasn't just a quick preview; it was Nintendo's big real-world marketing bet that the "weird" new Mario would carry their entire print campaign.Today it's such a forgotten footnote that even people who owned every Nintendo Power issue rarely connect that the magazine's entire existence kicked off as a straight-up SMB2 advertisement vehicle. No strategy guide, no TV spot, and no modern retrospective ever highlights it as the flagship tie-in it actually was - pure 1988-era Nintendo hustle that helped turn the game into a cultural event.

No sane human actually types like this.
>>12532843The whole nintendo using a magazine to promote their products being a cutting edge idea is silly too. Hasbro and Mattel had done the same thing using cartoons to promote their toys for years. Nintendo even tried that as well. Not a subscription service but they were making extra money off long form commercials.
>>12532352A lot of enemies like Shy Guy, Sniffit, Pokey and Bom-omb wouldn't be "Mario" enemies without this game being inducted into Mario series. Same with Luigi and Peaches unique jumping style.
>>12532352It was the first time a Mario game allowed you to play as a gay character.
>>12532896What about Faggy Kong? Okay its not a Mario game per se but DK games are in the Mario universe.
>>12532352- Luigi jumps the highest- Princess Toadstool can float- Toad is actually the strongest, and can lift up items the fastest, but also has the worst jump- Mario is 100% in the middle when it comes to every stat.

I originally played it as "super bros 5" in my famiclone back in the early 90s.
>>12532979I don't know why you'd brag about being poor/a third worlder on here
>>12532989Not bragging, just sharing a different curiosity about the game. Also soon after I got both a SNES and a Genesis. The famiclone was great though, lots of cheap games and piracy meant a lot of japan-only games too.
>>12532352This was the game I picked when my parents bought me a Nintendo. A Walmart had just come to our town.I would later buy my super nintendo at Woolworth's.
