We know Tetris is one of the best puzzle-action games ever, but why is no one talking about the thinking man's Tetris? I find Dr. Mario's formula more satisfying than Tetris' equivalent "game-b" of clearing the lines. I've been playing today and had a blast, made it all the way to level 17 in an afternoon.

By about level 19 or 20 it gets down to pure RNG and luck. You either get a good piece at the start or you've just wasted an hour. Not very cool for a puzzle game.

Well yeah I can definitely see how trying to score/1cc it can be an insufferable pain in the ass because of the rng alone, but as a casual experience it's nice to just pick up and play. Tetris can also get pretty nasty with the rng in the later levels, specially if you're trying to score, and unlike this game in Tetris you're playing the levels separately, so I see Dr. mario the same way since it even gives you the ability to select the level.

It's a minor nitpick desu and Dr. Mario is my favorite puzzle game. It just would be nice if those last few levels were a little less chance-based at the start. Past a certain point though it does feel like it's more down to the player's skill than a lot of other puzzle games. The absolute worst series in that regard is Puyo Puyo imo.

This was the last Famicom game to sell a million copies.

May be the worst well dropping puzzle game around

I dont think ive ever played this outside of warioware on gba and maybe some game and watch collection. I do love tetris so maybe ill give it another try. I also used to love dr robotniks mean bean machine on the sonic mega collection which was a puyp puyo clone.

Tetris 2 ('94) is a spiritual successor to Dr. Mario, you should try it.

>clone
It was the American localization of the first Puyo, it wasn't a clone.

I've 1cc'd it at least once in my life, over about 20 years of playing it off and on in concentrated bursts. It's hilarious to me that it's a part of the game's regular RetroAchievement set as if it's something that is even based on skill.

>Tetris 2 ('94)
Wow I had an eye on that game but had no idea how it actually worked, didn't know it was basically Dr. Mario 2. Thanks, now that you mention it I'll move it higher on my priority list.

As popular as NES Tetris is, it's a wonder Tetris 2 is so forgotten. There haven't even been any rereleases as far as I know.

It's probably because it's so different to other Tetris games, on top of being a very late NES release. I've had the urge to play Tetris for the last few weeks, but haven't really decided on which version I should play, so I sat down and sampled some of the NES titles yesterday. I'll be honest, I didn't like Tetris 2 '94. The color matching mechanic adds a degree of tediousness that I don't want from a comfort game like Tetris. As someone who played the Tengen NES version as a kid in the early 2000s, I greatly preferred Tetris 2 + Bombliss, because it's much more traditional, and I like the art + music.

Adding color-matching and gravity-driven combos to Tetris without changing much else just destroys the Tetrisness of it. Yet somehow, the only Tetris-derived clean-the-tiles-from-the-well game I've ever played that actually felt anything like Tetris to me was... Mr. Driller, which features color-matching, combos, AND a player character in the well. But somehow it all cancels out and ends up restoring the purity and elegance of Tetris, in my opinion, even though the two games differ greatly in their gameplay action. So maybe try one of the many versions of that if you haven't.

For some reason, women really love Dr. Mario
