At first I just felt confused because I couldn't tell the difference between this and the regular leaf, but when I learned about the statue thing it kinda shocked me. Probably my favourite power up because of that experience alone lol

I only knew it because of Nintendo Power I think. And I don't think I learned anything about what the statue's design was borrowed from until I read it as an adult in some thread on /vr/.

It was many years later I discovered that a third of Mario content was some form of Japanese folklore crammed into the game. Then it turned into a game of checking up on old weird things to see if that was also some piece of Japanese myth or not.
