Where do I start with this series if I want to play all of the canon games in order? The release order is confusing af.
And is there any reason to play the console versions over the arcade ones?

Start with the Speccy version of the first one.

Wonder Boy
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Monster Lair
The Dragon's Trap
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Monster World IV

The Master System ports of the two first game has a couple additional levels.

Mogged by Adventure Island

Fair, yeah. I'd argue that the Adventure Island games are probably better overall than the original Wonderboy

But damn, Adventure Island CANNOT touch the Monster World games. I still remember when Hudson tried to do an Action RPG with the series (Super Adventure Island 2) and it kind of fell flat

Adding to this the SG-1000 port of the first one is practically a different game entirely

What about Monster Lair, should I play the arcade or the Turbo CD? I'm so confused by all the different ports. I just want to play the definitive versions of each.

>Definite version
It's the ones that everyone played so
>Wonder Boy = Sega System
>Wonder Boy in Monster Land = Sega System
>Monster Lair = PC Engine
>Dragon's Curse = PC Engine
>Wonder Boy in Monster World = Mega Drive
>Monster World IV = Mega Drive

>Sega System
Not sure if trolling but I'll try it. I'm probably going to play the arcade versions anyway with save states and then the rest without.

Dragon's Curse isn't a Wonder Boy game, it's another rebranding like Adventure Island
