It has some skill ceiling, but it's mostly a DPS race with half-baked setpieces. In MSLUG, the devs took all the setpieces and improved each one, so you can root everything in those Contra games. Even the arcade-only Konami shoot 'em ups handle Contra better than Contra itself. I won't even get started on Gunstar Heroes.

It's not about the difficulty, it's just poorly designed and unbalanced. And the game is downright miserable if you don't abuse the weapon swap "bug" (?) to shred enemies because they are just so fucking tanky.

Stage 1 is a giant clusterfuck
Stage 2 is probably the only good stage in the game with a fun boss as well
Stage 3 is gimmick trash, just looks and plays terrible with a boring and spongy boss
Stage 4 is more gimmick trash, an autoscroller with some of the worst bosses that have some bullshit patterns if you don't immediately nuke them
Stage 5 is even more gimmick trash, an even worse version of stage 2, with the absolute worst boss in the entire series (what the fuck were they thinking??)
Stage 6 is an homage to the NES games but it just doesn't work as the enemies are so fucking tanky it feels off, and the bossrush is so bland and forgettable, they just feel throwaway, and it's moreso just annoying that you have to do this entire sequence of easy time-wasting bosses whenever you game over on the bullshit final two bosses. The roulette boss is also horrible, with attacks that range from absolutely harmless to nearly-impossible-to-dodge kaizo bullshit, and the roulette wheel spins so fast it's near impossible to actually influence it in any meaningful way

Some of the parts of Contra 3 are legitimately fun and remind you of the NES classics, but so much of your time is just spent on straight bullshit
