Nintendo SFX2 = 6x faster than CPU. With an FPGA the Genesis > Neo Geo and 32X > PS1.

Enhancements:
•CoProcessor: SFX2 offloads logic so CPU feeds VDP, maxing sprite count. Improve AI for RTS/logic games (factorio). 32X benefits more; handles scrolling/collision so SH-2s focus on 60fps bitmaps.

•Super Duper Scaler: Scale, rotate, distort every sprite/tile. VDP can’t replace every sprite every frame, but 32X can when dedicated to blasting bitmaps.

•Sprite Compositor: Convert sprites into tiles/bitmaps for pseudo-parallax. Limited by VDP speed, but 32X would have infinite parallax.

•Physics: 2D debris, destructible environments, and physics gameplay like Worms.

•Smart Temporal Dithering: Shifts alternating dither patterns to align gaps with previous pixels, creating the ultimate fake transparency.

•Palette Sequencer: MD can rewrite palettes during H-Blank to reach 512 colors, but CPU is too busy. A chip holds a color table and blasts data into CRAM during H-Blank. Combine with the compositor for true transparency.

•Blast processing cutscenes: With logic/sound offloaded, the CPU dedicates 100% power to 256-color video.

•SVP2: Converts 3D into 2D tiles for characters, creating fancier Donkey Kong Country sprites.

32X specific:
•RAM: #1 upgrade. Unlike MD, the cart can send sprites to 32X frame buffer. 8MB allows thousands of sprites and Neo Geo animation, and can que up data for burst mode (8 words in 12 cycles) so SH-2s never wait again.

•Modern compression: Stretches 256KB VRAM, making 20MB/s feel like 60MB/s.

•Priority masking: Automates "hole-punching" for 32X to draw behind the MD, allowing complex layering.

•Blitter: Blasts sprites from ROM to framebuffer, a ridiculous improvement.

•Geometry: SH-2s fill polygons well but struggle with vertex math. The chip handles Transform, Clipping, and Z-position, beating PS1 in areas.

•Lighting: Freed by the blitter and RAM, SH-2s gain idle time for dynamic lighting. lmao

With the RAM and the blitter alone you can easily port Symphony of the Night, Castlevania Chronicles, Resident Evil, Galerians, TRAG, Suikoden, Strider 2, Darius Gaiden, Gradius Gaiden, Policenauts, Baroque, Intelligent Qube, Community Pom, Brave Prove, Sexy Parodius, Langrisser 4, Rhapsody, SF Alpha 3, Neo Geo games, Parasite Eve, Oddworld, Star Fox 64, Grandia, Front Mission 3, Persona 2, Doom 64, Star Ocean 2 and Tales of Eternia. In fact, they would be the definitive versions because they would have no load times and the 32Xs bitmaps would actually look better than the compressed pre rendered Backgrounds on ps1.
