Let's settle this.
>left turns left
>right turns right
>up moves forwards
>down moves backwards
>sometimes the bumpers will strafe left and right
Why do people have a problem with this? Do they confuse left and right?

Makes sense. I do kinda predict my way running through resident evil hallways while moving. Its kinda easy to just hug a wall and keep going, if theres no quick turn button like some have then you either make a 3 point turn or just walk backwards.
>>
if you think tank controls are wacky, my father used to set up the "up" direction on the joystick to move right in 2d platformers because it was "forward".

You don't accelerate/reverse with up/down in driving games on a controller.
Ridin' Jill Valentine like she's mario kart.
>>
it's mostly young people who only play camera relative controlling games
>>
>>12535057
turning is inherently slow with tank controls, outside of 180 quick turn functions it has no concept of a pivot. it works in the context of resident evil, but in other general purpose action games it can feel limiting and a bit of a chore to micromanage.
>>
>>12535057
Most people are retarded, anon.
>>
The only positive thing I have to say about modern gaming is that tank controls no longer exist. Thank fuck. I'm glad they're dead.

another question is why they're called tank controls despite working nothing like an actual tank
The only games I can think of with that sort of scheme for a humanoid would be Robot Alchemic Drive
>>
>>12535267
Have you tried slightly reversing and adjusting so you can run forwards?
>>
>>12535561
no more herbs, will
>>
>>12535565
this isn't something you can handwave as a skill issue. I'm as well versed in tank controls as anyone here who isn't a speedrunner.
>>
>>12535075
That seems kinda self fellating but I can’t argue with the logic. I’ve never felt like tank controls were that hard to understand. In resident evil in particular I wonder if some people just can’t make a visual map of the room layout in their head so any change in camera angle disorients them?
>>
>>12535586
Not my problem
>>
>>12535565
Turning will be faster In a game like resident evil if youre holding sprint, forwards and turn. You gotta micro adjust right so yes. Skill issue.

This. It's not that people don't understand the mechanics. They're just clunky mechanics that only work in specific circumstances. RE was kind of the perfect context for tank controls and even then it got frustrating at times.
>>
>>12535829
what sets resident evil apart is that leverages tank controls to do something unique, steering around slow moving zombies is something that genuinely wouldn't work as well with a camera relative movement system.
>>
>>12535057
i remember my sister struggling to drive in GTA (1) because when driving down the screen left on the keyboard makes the car go to the right on the screen. i guess some people are like that, they struggle to imagine the perspective of the thing being controlled when it differs from how you're seeing it yourself
>>
>>12535562
my guess is because it's similar to how you'd drive a car, except you can pivot on the spot... like a tank can do. sure you don't control each side like a tank but it's a reasonable analogy otherwise
>>
>>12535057
I wouldn't say they are tank controls if you can strafe. Don't remember tho if there was a game where you turn and move forward and backwards like a tank, but you could quickly sidestep. A sidestep/180 is a bit different. Strafing for me means you basically have free controls, not tank.
>>
>>12535895
Every silent hill you can strafe
Most first person mech games with tank controls have strafing.
Maybe you can argue if it let's you move forward while strafing with L1 or R1 then I can see that. I dont think silent hill 1 let you do that.
>>

>woman can't drive
it can't be helped
>>
>>12535903
Yeah that's what I was thinking but couldn't articulate it well. If you can move in these dimensions at the same time, then they are just normal controls. Strafing but locked into strafing (and turning? but not forward/backward) is kind of there, but if you think about a tank they don't strafe even a bit. They just turn and go backward/forward.
>>
>>12535907
I dont think ive ever seen a game that locks you into strafing let you turn at the same time. Its only left or right. Just pretend this is a top secret tank that can strafe left and right that (you) dont know about.
>>
>>12535909
I know about arkham knight bat tank and it can strafe.

>>
>>12535057
i don't know. it never seemed complicated to me.
>>
i wonder if people who have difficulty with tank controls also have issues controlling other things they have a disconnected view of, like for example real-life RC cars
>>
>>12535057
slow turning rate in action gamus.
>>
>>12535995
Plan better
>>
>>12535907
but tanks absolutely can strafe
from the crew's PoV, within the turret, the chassis can move sideways in relation to the target while the turret moves independently
it's no different than how a human being would do it, as they'd have to pivot their torso left or right to accomplish the same thing
people aren't crabwalking sideways when they do so
>>
>>12535998
i want action games to be SANIC fast. if they gonna tank controls me, they better give me a damn tank! or Battletech mech! or be fast like DOOMguy.
>>12535991
im a mechwarrior. probably played thousands of hrs in MW2 and MW4. how many tanky or mech games have you played?

>im a mechwarrior. probably played thousands of hrs in MW2 and MW4. how many tanky or mech games have you played?
i'm not sure how this relates to my post. though i suppose i should clarify that i'm more talking about games with fixed cameras, like resident evil or alone in the dark. fully 3d games with tank-ey controls like mechwarrior shouldn't have the same issue of people messing up which button to press for which direction they want to move, i mean at that point it's basically just driving controls unless you're talking about literal tank controls, but controls for a tank aren't the same as what people mean when they say tank controls
>>
>>12536038
True but in these games especially on consoles you don't have aim that's independent of your actual direction so it's actually not tank-like in that way. Or I guess there obviously has existed tanks which only shoot at the direction they are headed at.

Thinking super deep that the part of "tank" controls just means the characters move pretty slow.
>>
>>12535057
>Why do people have a problem with this?
Because zoomers are retarded and can't do shit. Anyone old enough to have been around for shit like RE can use tank controls without issue.
