Spiritual successor means channeling the energy as an intentional sequel, but I think you’re comparing more results than intent. Hardware wise, N64 and Jaguar are actually very similar.

Both consoles that released two years after their biggest competition, and provided few hardware advantages to justify buying over the already established console, and even had some notable disadvantages. Consoles of choice for those who prioritize bright colors over all else.

It's much deeper, in my opinion:

5th generation:
PS1 is half PC Engine (big corpo trying to take over gaming with a console that's weaker than both of their competitors, and trying to 1-up everyone on the technology / media side) and half SNES (giant library of third party games, appealed to every region)

Saturn is half PC-Engine (weeb shit) and half Mega Drive (Arcade focus)

N64 is half SNES (strong first-party library, best graphics) and half Mega Drive (American focus). Jaguar doesn't even enter the discussion.

6th generation:
PS1 > PS2, pretty straightforward

N64 > GameCube (wrong media type, but overall same line of thinking, graphic powerhouse and strong first party)

Dreamcast is half Saturn (arcade focus, usual SEGA stuff) and half PS1 (trying to 1-up everyone technologically)

Xbox is half Dreamcast (trying to 1-up everyone technologically, got some SEGA stuff, appealed to similar demographics in the West), 25% N64 (Focus on America, graphics) and 25% PS1 (corporation attempts to take over gaming)

For PC Engine yeah I get it was supposed to go against the Famicom / NES but at the end of the day true PC Engine 2 didn't really happen and it got released late in America so consider SNES and Mega Drive as its competitor. For PS1, it's weaker than both the Saturn and the N64 in every way, people wrongly use the 'Saturn for 2D and PS1 for 3D' rule but the Saturn is more powerful in every way the multiplats only look uglier on Saturn because developers didn't bother learning to develop for a very complicated system with a small userbase.

Anon there's not a single spec where the PS1 beats the Saturn. Theoretically the Saturn is simply more powerful than the PS1, and this is just facts.
