Atari Jaguar>N64-american consoles (the N64 was designed by silicon graphics) made primarily for an american audience-"64 Bits" consoles-Cartridge based system-focus on FPS-weird controllerSNES>PS1-the console dominating the market and getting all the third party-PS1 was at the beginning an add on for the SNES-Grey consoles-the PS1 sound chip is a direct evolution of the SNES sound chip-the PS1 controller is an evolution of the SNES controller -all the great Nintendo affiliated third party ip (Final fantasy, Dragon quest, Megaman, Castlevania,Street fighter...) goes to PS1 -PS1 even have it's own fire emblem (tear ring saga)Pc engine>Saturn-weeb consoles, relatively popular in japan, bomb in the west -huge shmup library -ram expansion hucard/cartridge -porn games and others Otaku shitMegadrive>Dreamcast -arcade focused console-Sonic is back-huge sports game library-Sega is cool again-flop in japan, more popular in the west-relatively cheapThe transition from 4th to 5th gen was quite fascinating
these are pretty surface level comparisons and I can tell you haven't actually spent much time playing a variety of games on Jaguar/TG16/Saturn/Dreamcast
>>12537230I thin i'm pretty spot onI have heard those comparaison tons of times before especially SNES>PS1 and PC engine>Saturn
faggot>OP-super retarded-huge faggot
The NES was just a souped up Apple II
>>12537276This
>Jaguar was declared an open platform back in 2000>homebrew scene is still dogshit 26 years laterWhy doesn't anybody care about the Jaguar, ataribros? :(
>>12537284Commodore PET*
only one of these that makes sense is dreamcast -> xbox
>>12537374Meh i think the Xbox has more in common with the N64 than the Dreamcast
>>12537343>child was declared a total fucking retard back in 2000>child was born in 2015>child wonders why nobody cares about its ridiculous shitMany such children
>>12537276this.
Actually:N64 is a spiritual successor to the Sega GenesisPS is a spiritual successor to the Game BoySega Saturn is a spiritual successor to the SNES and PC Engine
>>12537226i really like the shape of the Jag and N64
>>12537248>I think I’m spot on because I’m just regurgitating things I’ve read others saywow OP, very cool
>>12538091>Actually:>i'm a mentally ill child
Lotta meanies itt. Bad energy.
>>12538091That doesn't make sense at all
>>12537226Hey OP I like your attempt at discussion. But I disagree with your premise. Spiritual successor means channeling the energy as an intentional sequel, but I think you’re comparing more results than intent. It’s a flawed premise for “spiritual successor” discussion which is what I think is setting people off.
>>12538091
>>12537226>>12538242Hardware wise, N64 and Jaguar are actually very similar.>dual RISC CPU setup>fully programmable GPU>single channel memory>no sound chip>cartridge ROMWith the N64 having much more expensive internal hardware of course. Jaguar was extremely cost oriented.
>>12537226Sega Master System to SNESLater 8 bit system known for lots of colours for people who waited a bit and got the newer system with lots of colours. From having R-Type to Super R-Type which is a remix of R-Type 2.
>>12538632Nah you went to far
>>12538668No, he’s 100% correct. Both consoles that released two years after their biggest competition, and provided few hardware advantages to justify buying over the already established console, and even had some notable disadvantages. Consoles of choice for those who prioritize bright colors over all else.
>>12537226It's much deeper, in my opinion: 5th generation:PS1 is half PC Engine (big corpo trying to take over gaming with a console that's weaker than both of their competitors, and trying to 1-up everyone on the technology / media side) and half SNES (giant library of third party games, appealed to every region)Saturn is half PC-Engine (weeb shit) and half Mega Drive (Arcade focus)N64 is half SNES (strong first-party library, best graphics) and half Mega Drive (American focus). Jaguar doesn't even enter the discussion.6th generation:PS1 > PS2, pretty straightforwardN64 > GameCube (wrong media type, but overall same line of thinking, graphic powerhouse and strong first party)Dreamcast is half Saturn (arcade focus, usual SEGA stuff) and half PS1 (trying to 1-up everyone technologically)Xbox is half Dreamcast (trying to 1-up everyone technologically, got some SEGA stuff, appealed to similar demographics in the West), 25% N64 (Focus on America, graphics) and 25% PS1 (corporation attempts to take over gaming)
>>12538839>with a console that's weaker than both of their competitorsHum no
>>12538872talking about the PC Engine or PS1? For PC Engine yeah I get it was supposed to go against the Famicom / NES but at the end of the day true PC Engine 2 didn't really happen and it got released late in America so consider SNES and Mega Drive as its competitor. For PS1, it's weaker than both the Saturn and the N64 in every way, people wrongly use the 'Saturn for 2D and PS1 for 3D' rule but the Saturn is more powerful in every way the multiplats only look uglier on Saturn because developers didn't bother learning to develop for a very complicated system with a small userbase.
>>12538897>For PS1, it's weaker than both the Saturn and the N64 in every wayNoYou clearly don't know what your talking about i suggest you quit here
Dreamcast > Xbox
>>12538947Anon there's not a single spec where the PS1 beats the Saturn. Theoretically the Saturn is simply more powerful than the PS1, and this is just facts. What happened is that no one bothered learning how to develop for the Saturn. The N64 is obviously more powerful than both. There's no need to be a console warrior for 30 year old systems anon
>>12538991No PS1 is much faster in handling polygons
>>12537381Pretty true if you ask me, the similarities really tickle my autism>more powerful hardware than the competition>very multiplayer-oriented and full of 4-player party games>spearheading FPS on consoles (N64 had Goldeneye, Turok, Perfect Dark, Xbox had Halo and Doom III)>many ports and spinoffs of PC games (Doom 64, Quake II, Command & Conquer, Starcraft 64 / Morrowind, Max Payne, Unreal Championship, Serious Sam, Far Cry Instincts, etc.)>a lot early adopters of the Xbox and Halo were Goldeneye 4-player splitscreen bros>3D platformers (N64 obviously had Mario, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong, Xbox had Blinx, Oddworld Munch's Oddysee, Psychonauts and ToeJam & Earl III which was originally developed for n64 and feels very collectathon)>flopped in japan and europe, but are american staples>no JRPGs>rareware
>>12537960>child declared retarded 15 years before it's bornBased Minority Report anon
