How did a game that released so late into the consoles life be so influential?

Like the 360 was right around the corner but some how God of War dropped 2 games on the PS2 and still managed to have a major influence for nearly a decade on hack n slash games.
Discuss God of War, why it sucked, what it did well, whatever you want
>>
>be so influential
It wasn't.
>>
>>12537640
More important than Metroid Prime

>Metroid Prime - 2.84 million
>Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - 1.10 million
>God of War: 4.62 million
>God of War 2: 4.23 million

Look at that huge dip with Echoes. It's clear people didn't like Prime 1, yet it's still shilled like it saved gaming or something.
>>

No mystery there. The GameCube had a far smaller install base compared to the PS2. If anything, I would’ve expected the first two GoW games to sell better.
>>
Not only has this exact thread been made before, these exact replies, as well. Dead internet theory is real.
>>
>>12537654
Single player Sony exclusives DON’T sell and that’s the bottom line. Sony consoles have never been bolstered by exclusives. It’s GTA/CoD/FIFA.
>>
>>12537654
Nta, and I don’t necessarily agree, but you missed the point he was making. It’s not about either of those GoW titles outselling Prime. He’s arguing that Metroid Prine didn’t have much staying power or immediate influence, since it sold less than half the copies of the first game, while GoW sales stayed consistent.
>>
>>12537660
Bloodborne sales were always a small drop in the bucket compared to popular multiplats. Sony exclusives don’t really matter that much.
>>
>>12537665
Well yeah. The PS2 sold 100+ million. Metroid afaik has only ever been primarily popular in North America. My understanding is that the NA console market was Nintendo’s top selling region for several years until the Switch became Japan’s favorite.
>>
>>12537637
I knew that GoW was obviously influenced by DMC, but it shocked me to realize every single PS2 DMC game had already released before even GoW1 came out. So Kratos' over the top attitude was probably inspired directly from DMC3.
>>
>>12537654
Holy shit you're an annoying retarded faggot, lmao
>>
I never understood why Sony pushed it so hard. It sold well but wasn't even on the PS2 top ten.
It sold around half of what Goldeneye on N64 or Harry Potter on PS1 sold.
It sold less than Dragon Quest VIII and somehow people say that DQ failed in the west but praise God of War as one of the greatest hits of all time.
>>
>>12537897
something being leveraged for a corporate narrative isn't going to be 1:1 sales. god of war broke the necessary sales floor to be relevant, that's all that mattered.
>>
>>12537637
>360 was right around the corner

It was out. The ps3 and wii were also out
>>
>>12537897
>>12537660
You are forgeting the massive amounts of chipped consoles and burned discs at that time. God of War really was huge but games like Harry Potter Ps1 or PES sold more because they were not 18+/M so relatives would buy them full price as a gift for little Timmy would likes his nintendos video toys and I know this, "it's sports, I like sports so that's a good gift" or "this is the multimedia franchise that's everywhere and they say kids love it, can't go wrong with that one".
>>
>>12537905
GoW1 was '05. Ps3 wasnt out yet
>>
>>12537637
Damn that was late ps2 game? I always thought it was some mid early title

>traversing several shipwrecks as you kill a Hydra then walk inside its corpse
>seeing Ares fighting in the background of Athens
>making your way to the Oracle's temple
>the first time you climb the mountain behind the temple, and realize you're standing where Kratos kills himself in the intro
>crossing the Sword of the Gods
>blowing the horn in the desert and climbing Cronos
>overcoming Pandora's Temple's deadly puzzles as you see Pathos Verdes III's growing madness as his family perishes during construction
>Hades' challenge with the giant corridor with flaming boulders coming your way
>the final puzzle of the lower levels where you align the three rings so a huge statue can rise, its hands lowering you to the next area of the temple
>the final room with foreshadowings of the future and the reveal of Pandora's Box
>feeling your
victory be snatched away from you as Ares kills you from Athens and you find out for the first time that Kratos' white skin is actually the ashes of his family, fastened to his body as an eternal reminder of his original sin
>escaping from Hades and finding out what that grave and gravedigger from the beginning of the game were about
>the nightmare Ares sends you to, protecting your family from yourself in a brilliant setpiece of ludonarrative harmony
>coming full circle with the ending, and the obvious yet surprising turn of events with the gods needing a new god of war and Kratos fitting the bill
1 feels like a perfect self-contained Greek epic ending with Kratos remaining the God of War throughout time up to modern warfare. Things like Kratos taking entire days to climb up Cronos also adds to that feeling of the game being like an odyssey. It's just a neat, well rounded adventure.

>God of war
New franchise.

>Metroid
Well-known franchise.

>Gamecube
Smaller install base, but with a very low proportion of good games to buy. So, everyone ended up buying the same games.

>PS2
Huge variety of great games to buy...
>>
Why do people cope about God of war so much, I don't absolutely love those games or action games like it that much
My favorite one is kingdom hearts 2 ffs lol but God of war is perfectly fine with a lot of style and fun enough gameplay. It clearly was and still is a big icon of gaming.
My dad who only played everquest can recognize kratos, he will not know who dante or ryu are.
>>
>>12537637
Didnt sony develop it

Obviously they paid off the magazines etc to shill it
>>
>>12537674
Yeah, you still didn’t understand the point, even after the point was explained in laborious detail.
>>
>>12538521
Metroid was never one of Nintendo’s top tier populate franchises and God of War was heavily hyped. Sure Metroid had been around longer, but Prime was the first time the series made the jump to 3D and the first console Metroid game in almost a decade.
>>
>>12538706
top tier popular franchises*
>>
>>12538436
I’ve only seen people hate on Sony movie game nu Kratos, not the original three classic style games.
>>
>>12538706
Okay, let me explain it once more, slowly. The argument was never about GoW selling more than Prime, it was about player retention. GoW 2 sold about the same as its predecessor - despite next gen consoles being out at that point . Prime 2 on the other hand, struggled to retain players who bought the first game. The sales for Prime 1 are actually very remarkable considering it’s on Gamecube, I believe it’s the best selling game in the franchise, but that just makes Prime 2’s sales more damning. The series couldn’t maintain the hype when the sequel released.

The argument was that this means the first GoW was well liked and had immediate cultural influence, because players came back to buy the sequel; by contrast, this suggests the first Prime was not strongly liked by those who bought it because a smaller proportion of players who purchased the first game bought Prime 2. Crystal?
>>
>>12538753
Yeah, I get what you’re saying. It seems to me that the first Prime brought in a lot of people who had never played Metroid before possibly expecting it to be Nintendo’s answer to Halo. I’m not shocked that Echoes sold a lot less.
>>
>>12537640
It was and denying that is just plain wrong.
>>12537637
I think you underestimate the popularity of the PS2, and overestimate how popular the 360/PS3 were. Most people still had a PS2 at this point, GoW was a good game and people got it. It really is that simple. You could ask the same of NES games where new ones were still being made and sold well into the SNES lifetime. Kirby is a good example, that game came out in 93 and still was massively popular
>>
>>12538348
It wasn’t that late into its lifespan: FF VI, Earthbound, DKC, Yoshi’s Island, Chrono Trigger, etc. weren’t even out yet.
>>
>>12538843
Going by OP's criteria, it was
>next gen systems around the corner
>>
>>12537657
he's right. grim.

As with Mortal Kombat, it's the American version of [popular game genre at the time], so they propped it up as you'd expect even if it wasn't that good.
It's like Rugby and Football. Desperate attempts at being independent instead of appreciating something that already exists.
>>
>>12539682
Aside from the Devil May Cry games which also had sequel troubles, what else from the PS2 era are you comparing God of War to? They were very well made first party games.
>>
I mean the first year or two the only thing that the 360 had was CoD2 and maybe Viva Pinata
>>
god of war is kind of like crash in that they were both "mascot" playstation ips that were seemingly popular as hell but just in my circle of friends no one cared about them at all
>>
>>12538291
it's on the later side, it came out in 2005 and while the ps2 did last a few years after that it was pretty much finished by about 2008/2009
op's 360 reference suggests it was late because the next gen was starting that year, which i suppose is fair, but a few major titles still came out after 2005, such as Okami (2006), God of War II (2007) of course, and Persona 4 (2008)
