What are you fixing up? What are you working on? Need any advice? Ask it here.I just fixed up 3 original Xbox controllers (2 blue, 1 black) and 3 Dual Shock 2's (all black.) Feeling accomplished.
I once tried replacing a broken ds lite shell. I bought a cheap chinese one and upon placing the motherboard into the shell and guiding the cables into their alotted sockets for the speakers, one of the "sockets" i guess were too sharp and it cut the cable. That ended up pissing me off and then I forgot what step I was on and then never ended up finishing it. I've replaced all the buttons on a ps4 controller which was fun. It was interesting seeing how the touchpad looked inside.
>>12537978not retro
>>12538007DS is retro, its 20 years at this point
>>12537968I've had a dead Game Gear and a capacitor replacement kit for over 10 years and haven't gotten around to fixing it because I hate soldering and there are like 40 of them to replace.
>>12537978DS and 3DS are by far my most hated systems to repair. The ribbon cable from the top screen is such a bitch to put back in place.
>>12537968I'm currently waiting for my gdemu clone to arrive from China and for a new SD card for my wii. I thought my SD card reader was broken and went through the process of re-softmodding it before I realized that the wii just doesn't recognize that specific SD card for some dumb reason. I'm not even gonna tough my ps2 because finding the sata-to-usb hard drive thing I have in a box somewhere seems like an enormous pain in the ass. I'm stoked about my gdemu though
>>12538061Oh also I just replaced my ps2 sticks because they were melting and then got to fuck around with the controller for another hour to figure out why the bumpers/triggers weren't working when I put it back together
>>12538063Membranes were out of place right? Always happens to me.
>>12538065Yep that's exactly what it was
>>12537968Any advice for how to make new screw posts in these OG Xbox controllers out of epoxy or something? I bought a lot of 6 of these as-is from a Goodwill auction and opened them up for cleaning/repair, a lot of the posts snapped off since the plastic is so brittle, and I just glued them back together, but some pretty much disintegrated beyond repair.
>>12538114Also, is there a good replacement for the graphite pad under the buttons? I was going to just use electric paint, but I heard this would get rid of any button sensitivity for the handful of games that support it. I tried the pencil trick and it didn't work.
I bricked two original Xbox consoles trying to modify the xbox.ini file to make the consoles boot from XBMC. I fried an N64 after trying to solder the RGB mod. I fried a GameCube trying to solder an HDMI port mod in place of the AV/Component port.
>>12538114I was going to tell you to check customxboxdirect on etsy, because he used to sell some kind of wood screw that works like magic to seal up these shitty Xbox controllers. Looks like he's closing up shop and I don't see the screws on there anymore. Easily one of the best shops for Xbox modders, so it's a shame it won't be around.
>>12537968Hardware, and all the gear and space you need maintaining it, is a burden. I put everything is storage now and just emulate everything. The only thing I tinker with is controllers, and I can put all that stuff in a single drawer. It's be very freeing.
>>12538039Read the pin moron
>>12537968my little niece broke my japanese hueg controller (the buttons are slightly different) and i'm still sad, i need a new shell for it i suppose or maybe i can make a Frankenstein's monster out of it by reusing the parts
>>12537978I have a gba 101 (light blue), i had it in storage for like a year (in was in a protective case) and when i took it out the whole top part of the shell was broken, the plastic was so brittle that i could snap it with just 2 fingers. I bought a new one from the internet and it was purple so now my gba looks like a pimp with the top light blue and purple bottom
>>12538120Just replace the membrane with this one with the domed contacts.https://www.ebay.com/itm/235234969366https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806077207776.htmlThey need to be domed or else pressure sensitivity won't work.
>>12538052Yea, it was overall just a bad experience. But I did learn from it. Thats when I learned replacing a screen must be a pain in the ass. Well at least the touchscreen.
>>12538458Nice. I couldve sworn dual colored gba's existed as an exclusive/limited run or maybe im misremembering a modded one.
>>12538241Use your brain, dumbass
>>12538635the NES colored GBA is kinda dual colored if you think about it
>>12537968I just got done recapping my regular crt and pvm. I also modded a gamecube with hdmi, a region mod and picoloader.Went surprisingly smoothly apart from the picoloader software setup
>>12538727Maybe thats the one. But damn ive never witnessed or even heard of plastic on a video game console turn brittle like that.
>>12537968I do a lot of cleaning, refurbishing, and general replacement of easy things- should I get into soldering though? How long does it take to get into? How much free time do I need to learn the basics? I'm 38, and I work full-time during the week, but I really want to try and fix stuff more thoroughly. Should I go to school for some basic electronic education before I even think about soldering or can anybody just grab a multimeter and a basic cheap 100 dollar soldering "kit" these days?
>>12538979Honestly unless you're microsoldering anything which even for the experienced is a bitch sometimes you don't need any special training. Get a how to solder for dummies book, buy some cheap learn to solder kits and watch youtube. You don't even need an expensive $100 kit to learn on, a cheap $50 Weller brand station is good enough to learn.
>>12538979It's like painting but instead of looking like an exotic bird if you bump your elbow you feel an incredibly painful and concentrated burn.Very useful skill. If you're looking for tool or parts suggestions just ask.
>>12538061Is your wii on the most recent firmware? SD card support was improved on later firmwares
Fixed my Saturn power on issue while I was doing another mods. Picrelated are the voltages form the power supply since I thought it was failing. What fixed it? Well I fixed one trace grom the 50/60 Hz switch I installed many years ago and I found some mysterious cold solder blob that was really tall, could short to GND. I'm very happy how things ended. DFO would be nice but I'm not doing it without any good schematics. Next I plan to mod Hori SS arcade stick by changing the stick, buttons and adding PS1 harness to make it 2in one stick. I might do some serious schematics for this since all the information about this mod is all over the internet.
>>12539185Do you mean the system menu? It's 4.3U, pretty sure. I guess my definition of off-brand SD card is strange. I remember my g.skill SD card working for forever but literally every single other brand of SD card I have is recognized by the wii except the one with the storage size I want. Really frustrating Holy shit I can finally post again
>>12538717>>>/vr/ is for retro gamesDS isn't retrogo to >>>/v/
>>12538979Depending on how technical you get depends on whether youre going to want to learn the fundamentals. Most common and typical things are covered through tutorial.
Tried to repair the vertical lines on a GB screen with the soldering iron only to discover them already bad since the ribbon was loose.
>>12537968is that the controller in this comic??https://imgur.com/gallery/RoS7nY6
