About to play the original LoZ for the first time, what do I need to know or expect? I know it's not that long by modern standards but I heard it's insanely cryptic.
>>
there definitely needs to be a way to legally slit zoomers' throats online

but i'm a millenial
>>
>>12539427
then you should be old enough to understand that 8 year old children put the cartridge in their NES game console and pressed power and played the game and had fun

fucking end yourself if you need a "know" something going in or else you're too scared to play the game you miserable piece of shit
>>
>>12539431
I think you're the miserable one here, friend.
>>
>>12539435
enjoy being too terrified to play a 40 year old video game you learned-helpless piece of shit
>>
>>12539438
sorry that I offended you.
>>
>what do I need to know or expect?
The game comes with a manual and a map for a reason. The only people who struggled with the game either had used copies with no manuals, or they emulated it blind.
>>
>>12539440
in the 13 minutes since you started this dipshit thread you could have been playing the game and already found the first dungeon
>>
>>12539445
I'm emulating it since I lack an NES to play it.
>>
>>12539446
Maybe it's time to get off 4chan and calm down, there are plenty of hobbies you can engage in.
>>
>>12539445
>posts the map that was literally sealed and told you to only use as a last resort
>>
>>12539402
Use the manual and map (both online pdfs)

That's really all you need, don't use save states/rewind, and look things up sparingly if you're really stuck

always pick the heart over the potion
>>
>>12539478
Back in the day a kid might play Zelda for six months straight. Using the map/manual is a very reasonable compromise, far better than abusing cheats/save states.

Also doesn't the manual include a smaller and less detailed map as well?
>>
>>12539445
I regret to inform you that you did not, in fact, beat the game.
>>
>>12539424
just popping in to say I agree with this poster and OP needs killed

you're so hot, lets fuck

>>12539482
>Also doesn't the manual include a smaller and less detailed map as well?
Yes it has a walkthrough and map to get you to the first 2 dungeons. It had a lot of hand holding for the game mechanics and it taught players the basics and "how to think, zelda style" that carried yo through the rest of the game.
>>
>>12539508
Pretty sure it explicitly tells you like half and gives you hints for the rest
>>
>>12539506
The "about to play X, what should I expect?" questions are exclusively posed by retards. You deserve to get flamed for making the board worse. Play the game first then make a thread afterwards if you want to talk about it.
>>
>>12539516
but i'm not the OP
>>
>>12539509
The manual is online, you could have doublechecked instead of just proving you're a retard.
>>
>>12539525
It shows you full dungeon maps for 1+2 but gives you locations on the map for 6 and hints for the rest
>>
>>12539525
Retard

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clv/manuals/en/pdf/CLV-P-NAANE.pdf

Near the bottom where "The Overworld" is it has a 75% completed map and explicit locations for 6 dungeons and hints for the rest
>>
>>12539556
>>12539570
That's not the manual that's the map that >>12539445 posted which was a separate thing you were told to only look at if you had given up at the game >>12539478
>>
>>12539402
Nigga just play it
>>
>>12539601
The separate map is a full map.

The map in the manual is only partial and less detailed
>>
>>12539646
Yeah, a partial map that shows you how to get from the start to the general area of Dungeons 1 and 2. There is no other map in the manual.
>>
>>12539659
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg81YDtMOAk

Here you can see the map included among the manuals, hints that show you where to find every Level/Dungeon (hints for the ones not explicitly labelled on the map). And the Nintendo Power advert even includes a full Zelda map on it instead of a partial.
>>
>>12539808
A sealed map that is not inside the manual and that you broke the seal on despite it saying it was only a last resort if you were being overwhelmed by the game
>>
>>12539445
The map was only included in American and British copies, Japanese and continental European players never got it.

Japanese players got it.
>>
>>12539836
It was included with the 1992 cartridge release only, not with the 1986 disk original.

>the Nintendo Power advert even includes a full Zelda map on it
This tiny thing that you can't see any detail on and is labeled as "the full map for the Second Quest"?
>>
>>12539823
nigga you think a kid really cared about that? They include a map in the game, you're going to use it. You take the wrap off the cartridge, no different than taking the sticker off the manual's map.

No one's going
>WOAH HOLD ON COWBOY!! IS THAT A STICKER I SPOT? I DON'T THINK I SHOULD OPEN THAT!!

That's also why it's extremely rare to find one with the sticker still on.
>>
>>12539851
Kids back then liked challenge, zoomie.
>>
>>12539857
Which is why Game Genie and Nintendo Power were wildly popular? Which is why kids would have little sheets with all the cheats written down?

This whole "you didn't beat the game if [x]" is complete revisionist bullshit. The only thing that's truly not beating the game is save states/rewind because those are meta cheating tools that never existed at the time and completely trivialize the experience.
>>
>>12539402
Go into it completely blind, don't use a guide at all under any circumstances. Also, get some graph paper and make a map of the overworld while you play. Could be helpful in the dungeons too but it's not necessary.
>>
OP did you get your brain tuned up and start playing the game yet?
>>
>>12539874
millenials are disingenious faggots who act like they're the ones who truly soldiered through every difficult game even though gameshark and game genie dominated in their era kek

Good grief, you Internet posters are angry.

Its fun but widely overrated by boomers the real Zelda started with A Link to the Past but Zelda Link Adventure is more fun than the first Zelda game
>>
I recently played through it on a whim when I was telling my kid about old Zelda games. I didn't own it as a kid myself, but played it a bit at a friend's house, maybe rented it once or twice. (Zelda II was instead the one I actually owned.)

I went through it a little bit at a time over several days without too much effort, no guides or anything. I made a map of the final dungeon just because of the all the little staircases that have you jumping randomly around in that one. But otherwise I found that most of the supposedly "impossible to figure out on your own" things in the game do in fact have clues or can be found by just experimenting a little. Maybe I had some dim memories of playing the game as a kid or reading old Nintendo Power articles which aided me in a few spots, but I really don't think this game is anywhere near as cryptic as people say. (Then again, I also just did both endings of Tunic without a guide or any outside help, so maybe I'm not the norm.)
>>
>>12542007
I've seen several Youtubefags play through both Zelda 1 and 2 blind without really getting stuck anywhere. The "impossibly cryptic" thing feels like it's mostly pushed by retards that never tried playing it without a guide.

Same with how retards that insist Castlevania 2 is impossibly cryptic by bringing up the red crystal puzzle. "Do the same thing you did that other time in a similar situation" is not a solution it takes a whole lot of time to think of trying.

>>12542034
>I've seen several Youtubefags play through both Zelda 1 and 2 blind
"blind"
It's a good way to get more viewers
>>

Have fun with Wizrobes and the Knights
>>
>>12541504
>widely overrated by boomers
A Link to the Past is the really overrated one. A step back that was at best a prototype for what future games would do better.
>>
>>12542956
Zelda 2 is definitely the overrated one, it was a massive downgrade to Zelda 1 across the board. I can see why some might prefer Zelda 1 to ALTTP since it has a bit more immediacy and the overworld is more open to explore, but ALTTP really is just a massive improvement in almost every way to Zelda 1: music, art, combat, enemies, a much more dense and detailed overworld, bossfights, puzzles, atmosphere, and especially the dungeons were WAY better than Zelda 1.

ALTTP feels like the true sequel to Zelda 1, while Zelda 2 is one step forward, five steps back.

>bomb every block, burn every tree
If you play the second quest this meme becomes true, and add blow the whistle on every screen
>>
>>12539402
>insanely cryptic
Yeah? I beat it without a guide last year, first time ever playing it.
>>
>>12539402
it's an fds game slapped onto a cartirdge and is insanely overhyped dogshit. play radia senki instead if you want an arpg on the nes/ fc
>>
You need to burn down the tree to get to the 8th dungeon

The only thing I had to actually look up when I played it
>>
>>12539402
RTFM, and you don't really need to play the second quest if it's too hard for you. That's all you need to know.
