I had a whole discussion with a guy about this. His argument was that real mastery of a game comes from clearing the level entirely, not just passing a section once because games have random elements or changing. Getting through one sequence once doesn't mean you deserve to have passed it forever and never see its other variants.
>>
>>12539543
Okay but what does that have to do with HAVING FUN
>>
>>12539569
The fun is in getting good. If you just want to see the end of the game watch a lets play.

I don't care what you do.
Let's say you're playing DKC2. You've got a save point with one free save. You have 4 lives and 3 levels and a boss ahead. The ability to live through that IS the challenge and you're only ruining the experience for yourself.
But don't come to me saying "CRT original system is the only way to play games" when you can't even handle playing normal kids games without save states or life tricks.

This "debate" has been around for decades and it will never stop because it's constantly reiterated by insecure nerds.
The "authentic experience" and "convenience" exist on a gradient and you should just do whatever you find enjoyable. You can even use them in some contexts and not others, depending on what feels "right" to you. I like to use savestates because I'm often playing on a handheld on the bus, or when drifting off to sleep. I don't give a shit if that makes my 'achievements' illegitimate, I just want to get through those games without constantly replaying a section I didn't have time to get past.
I'm the first person to defend difficulty as an artistic choice in game design and all that jazz, and so it's also fun to play games within their 'intended' limits and beat the highest modes.
You can do both. No one knows or cares to judge you unless you go on the internet and complain one way or another.

This is tangential, but I respect people playing games with savestates and/or Easy Mode much more than purely watching a letsplay then talking like they're deeply familiar with the game (or entire series). They are at least engaging with the gameplay on some level.

>>
>>12541463

>devs would punish rewind players if they knew about the feature.

literally impossible. rewind is emulator level. the only way for a program to detect when it has been rewound is that it tracks state to verify it. but the problem is that if you rewind, then it rewinds the operation to create that state.
>>
>>12541787
As a developer you could include some real time clock battery on the cartridge or use the actual clock in later gen consoles where you could compare the real time clock to the time spent ingame and if that differed in a significant way you could block access to a later level or something. If you are rewinding in a level because you keep dying your time at the end would be shorter than the real time clock, for example.

I dont know how emulators handle games that use real time clocks like animal crossing and pokemon but I assume there would be a way to hack the rom so you could cheat anyway so it wouldnt really solve anything.

Someone who has watched Expert/Legendary/Master difficulty gameplay knows more about the game on that mode than someone who only played Easy mode.
>>
>>12541349
It's very simple.

People should experience the media as originally intended and defautly given first. That way, they have a universally applicable opinion to give upon the matter and also undateable credibility with respect to having adequately engaged enough with said media to be considered qualified to speak upon the matter.

It is only upon *subsequent* experiences where skips and modifications become permissable as also valid experiences of additional dimensions of said media piece. Without that foundation, the alternate experiences cannot serve as valid frames of references from which to speak upon the media piece as a genericized whole, even when actually speaking to primarily only one if its many variations—such as, "skipping the boring parts".

it clearly shows the mindset of your and the following gen. You don't want to git gud anymore, you want everything to be served on a platter, because you are mindfucked by tiktok and such to always crave instant gratification. you lack the patience and perseverance to even finish a fucking video game, a child's toy, legitimately anymore.
I don't blame you personally, because you a victims of the gens before, the boomers who control the world, the shitty gen xers and millenials who are your parents and couldn't guide you and protect you properly. but I can blame your gen for not being rebellious and countercultural anymore. you never even tried, you just gave in to the slop and brainrot.

This is the opposite of why I'm replaying the DKC trilogy; I went through all of them with savestates more than 20 years ago but it was a chore and I have no memories of it. Now I'm having a blast by playing it slowly while having no fear of making a mistake because the games gives you truckloads of lives every other level.

This sort of autism is only possible if you’re a kid or a NEET, though. You need ample time for retro games to fuck up, learn and actually progress. Earlier this year I was NEETing so I could indulge myself without using save states. But suck my dick if I have to get off of work, have about half an hour of free time to play and spend 25 minutes of it retrying because I didn’t see the invisible spike #9 that insta kills you and had to do it like 20 times. And Other times I’m raging so much because of some bullshit that I just rewind.

Not what I said, faggot. I love retro games but for a lot of them you need time, whether if it’s because you wanna clear them quickly (therefore you sit down if you have extra time to sink and play away) or casually play it like when I just play a bit here and there so it takes longer. Like I said, if I’m NEETing I’ll play it old school.
>>

What is savestating skipping? Replaying the level from the last checkpoint from if you would have necessarily had to replay if you died. That replay is also part of the experience of actually playing the game. It is in essence fast forward, not rewind.

The problem is when people who do thst act like they beat the game and are able to form an opinion on it.

The annoying or rage inducing elements of a game are as much a part of it as the good and fun elemens. If you're skipping the former, when you go around saying you like the game, you're misleading people, because you don't actually know what the game is like, you don't know what the whole experience feels like because you didn't experience it.

By all means, do whatever you want to have fun, I don't care. But when you go interact with others, at least be honest and say "I beat the game using save states to avoid repetition" before sharing your opinion. At least that way other people will be able to gauge whether your opinion is relevant to them or not.
