Do you remember Black Hawk Down?
>>
Land Warrior was infinitely better.

Yep, got this with the expansion pack back when the servers were still alive and full of people. Played the holy fuck out of the game. The single player campaign is a lot of trial and error, and not very fun to play, but the MP was a blast. Shit would make you paranoid, since there was always a half dozen people out in the hills with sniper rifles and SAWs, so stepping around the wrong corner was a death sentence.
Too bad it died when Joint Operations came out, since everyone wanted to use vehicles.

Yeah Black Hawk Down was a great shooter, especially online with a large group of players. God I miss Novalogic.

I always was more into their flight combat sims like F-22 Lightning and Comanche though.

Member when every late 90s early 2000s shooter had this ridiculous rifle in it?

An then the stripped off the ballistic computer and 20mm launcher and called it the XM8. The fishgun was in every game after that.

Didn't play much of black hawk down but I played a lot of df 2. Singleplayer mostly but my friend had internet and I went to his house and played multiplayer there. I think it had an absolute massive player count as well. Like 100 or something? I remember loving seeing tracers go off all over the place on night maps. It was a really beautiful game in that sense. Would sit on hills and just watch the sky.

I only remember it looking ugly as shit

The OICW is the kind of ridiculous pipedream weapon which made it a perfect videogame gun.

Airburst rifles never went away, the US Army is still testing newer versions. Pic related was the latest still undergoing testing in 2026.
The ukraine war showed a greater need then ever for infantry counter-defilade weapons, as modern warfare has moved back to being trenches and grenade fights.

Oh, I know, I've been following that a bit, and the new weapons look a lot more promising, but the 20mm grenades used with the XM29 were too tiny, and tacking on an 8.5" barreled 5.56mm carbine underneath is just extremely awkward.
Definitely a viable concept, just ahead of its time back in the 1990s and 2000s, modern electronics really help compact down all the electronics.

Still, the OICW is a fun and goofy weapon that you can get away with in a videogame, where you can just make it better than it actually is. It was also the AR2 during Half-Life 2's development for a while.

I remember buying this for console specifically because it had 50 (or 64) simultaneous players online and that was pretty unique for a console shooter.

Yes, it's so basic yet fun!

I still play on PS2.
I've completed it dozens of times. It's a great game.
