About to play Donkey Kong 64 is it one of the worst games in history or an underrated gem that filtered many people?
It's a decent time waster to give your age 5-12 kid in 1999.I got it in 99, loved it. There's a good game somewhere in there, but last I tried playing it I only lasted 30 min and gave up.If you're playing to 100% it then you definitely won't like it. Treat it more as a playground than a list of tasks and it'll be enjoyable enough.Try it and see.

I had this as a kid and loved it (still do). Oddly enough, I didn't enjoy Mario 64 for some reason.

It happened multiple times. I think it’s a must have for N64. Make sure you got the upgraded RAMM or your N64 produces nerve gas unironically.
