This game is absolutely amazing.
Why don't I ever see this game in any list of the top 50 NES games?
The level design combined with the grappling hook means that a good player who has mastered movement can be incredibly aggressive in moving around and mowing enemies down before they even manage to land or even shoot at you. You're always studying the level design to play more effectively.
It's such a simple concept yet it is explored so well in this game. I'm surprised more games haven't tried this sort of gimmick (no jumping but you have a grappling hook). It feels like it would be the perfect concept to expand upon in an indie game.

BTW, I played the NES version. I heard the arcade port is completely different. Is it worth playing?

Top 20 nes game for me. Music gameplay, this game is amazing. Even the remake was pretty fun. Never heard about the arcade version tho. I’ll have to check it out.

The arcade game is interesting as an artifact but doesn't come close gameplay wise. There was a fun gameboy port that plays like an anime version of the NES title, not as long but worth checking out.

Bionic Commando appears on NES top lists all the time, it's always been considered a top tier title.

It's graphically better but way buggier. And way more unfair in terms of difficulty too.
This guy's video basically covers all the right complaints.

Make sure to play the GB version too, it's basically a whole different game with the same mechanics. Some of the grappling towards the end is really tough too, overall the grappling takes more skill in that version.

Amazing game. Played it many times in college on my NES. In 2010s.

This is precisely when the game got a ressurgence in popularity between the virtual console and the remake

one of my favorite nes games despite disliking the overworld/nonlinearity, radio stuff, and poor weapon balance
check out Streemerz for a cool grappling homebrew platformer

Don't confuse it with BC:Elite Forces for Game Boy Color. It's another all-different game and not nearly as good.

Yes, it's not BAD but the bigger sprites/shorter effective draw distance doesn't lend itself well to grappling hook gameplay. It's also a bit too easy imo.

It used to be frequently ranked among the best NES games but yeah I don't hear about it as often. I'll never get tired of the music, especially the Area 5 music it gives me chills

Because it has a steep learning curve and the leveling mechanic isn't obvious for new players.
People just picking up random platforming games find it doesn't have a jump and they have to learn to grapple around, and can only take a few hits before they die. Once someone masters the grapple and discovers they can 'level up' by defeating grunts and collecting the drops, then the game suddenly gets playable and much more forgiving and fun. But your average new player will just consider it to be a hard game that will take a lot of time to master, and skip on by unless they are looking for a challenge. If the devs removed the leveling mechanic and just gave players full health bars from the start, it would probably be a lot more accessible for new players. As it is, the very start of the game is the hardest part for new players who don't realize they can get a longer health bar, and experienced players get to waste time grinding up.

This never happened.

>>12542108
There are a lot of good NES games and there's a chunk of people who can't get past the fact it doesn't work like a typical platformer
>>
>>12542108
takes a while to get decent at it so you lose the platformer chimps and then the skill ceiling is pretty low so you lose the other kind of platformer chimps
>>

I had no idea you could level up and I best this game a bunch as a kid.

If you beat the game you should have realized your health bar grew as you picked up bullets

Wrong. If you increased your health you didn't beat the game.

I think I just forgot. It's been so long. I'm going to replay now because of this thread. And the remake. My only regret will be killing Hitler before the final solution can be implemented

Loved this game and the remake they made. The only thing it needed was actual boss fights, which the remake fixed.

>I heard the arcade port is completely different
Anon, the original release of a game is not a "port". A port is when you take software that has been released for a particular platform and you modify it so that it is compatible with a different platform.
