This is lost on many newer/PC gamers who obsess over how many people you can shoot with your keyboard or whatever. A game is a place where you spend time and getting the pace and feel of that place right is what makes for a memorable game. Nintendo during the GameCube era was very focused on this, having seen what happens when you let slop prevail (Sony Playstation). Many of the other best GC games like Metroid Prime took the same approach - first of all get the atmosphere and story right so people are immersed.

I haven't played all the way through this game since it was new, but my recollection was that it felt like one of those overhyped titles. Sure, it was cool, and the sanity thing was neat at first, but overall it felt too short, and the sanity effects quickly started to feel like gimmicky nuisances.
