5th gen was the wild west and Nintendo was just covering their bases, pretty smart move in my opinion, they didn't need to release seventeen different controllers like Sega did.
>>12543339When people say the n64 controller is confusing, I just assume those people are mentally retarded.
>>12543339you could play in all of these styles without changing your grip with the dualshock
>>125433603D games don't feel as good with the dualshock
>>12543360On a normal controller, the analog stick and the d-pad are fighting for the same ergonomic space. The N64 controller avoids this, albeit at a cost.
>>12543452The cost is my hands are too big for the center position so the controller crushes my knuckles ;w;
>>12543339>nintendo in 1996: we made a controller that fits all use-cases!>sony in 1997:
>>12543527Holding it at an angle towards your right hand can help, but I have the same problemit's honestly my only real issue with the design
>>12543551What are those sticks
>>12543558it's the Dual Analog (1997), not as well known since it was soon replaced by the Dual Shock (1998).it didn't have rumble motors, and as such had thinner grips like the original non-analog controller, and also concave stick pads which is the most visually obvious difference
>>12543551oh btw what's extra funny about this becoming the standard is that nobody at the time even really knew what do to with the second analog stick. the first game with modern console fps control mappings came out 3 years after this controller
>>12543594>Nintendo comes out with analog stick>Sony adds TWO analog sticks>Nintendo comes out with rumble>Sony adds TWO rumble motorsI kind of wish Nintendo had started with two analog sticks, just so we could see what abomination Sony would've come up with (three analog sticks? four?).
>>12543527My fat friend used to have this problem back in the day. RIP Justin.
Sony invented more stuff than Nintendo in terms of controller designDual stick?SonyR2,L2?SonyR3/L3(clickable joystick) ?SonyNintendo didn't invent D-pad,didn't invent joystick, didn't invent R1/L1...
>>12543620i'm sure a lot of the playstations' success was really just luck.i think the fact the dreamcast came out a year after the dual analog and also didn't use two sticks should be enough to remind you nobody yet saw it as a crucial feature
>>12543602No I'm pretty sure Descent already had dual stick controls even before dualshock even came out. It was configured for PS1 flight controller.
>>12543551>>12543620>>12543602>>12543642PS1 already had dual analog controller before dual shock. Many games actually used it.
>>12543345based
>>12543345They are. They treat a controller like it's an IQ test.
>>12543339>be genesis/psx kid>friend invites me over to play n64>want to use dpad to play the game>"why doesn't the dpad work?">"no you have to use this uncomfortable rigid plastic stick">"ugh...so what does the dpad do?">"this game doesnt use it"noped the fuck out of that console forever
>>12544160did you never play arcade games, either?sucks to be debilitatingly retarded
>>12543558The dual analogIt served no purpose really and it wasn't until the dualshock when games got true analogue support
>>12544056When they can't understand how to hold itI don't even know if they can grasp how to feel if they didn't eat breakfast
>>12544160>be a segay kid from a divorced family>get scared by a game not using a part of the controllernot surprising
>>12543602which is kind of dumb given wasd + mouselook games being a big thing on pcs. weird how it took them so long to connect the dots.
>>12545495actually wasd becoming the expected default took longer than you'd think/you remember.gets me every time i go to install unreal tournament (1999) for the hundredth time and it defaults to arrow keys. there were games going way back that did use wasd, but most games used the arrow keys or sometimes some other weird combo all through the '90smany of your favourite games you'd only play with wasd now didn't use it ootb, even DOOM
