Why would anyone buy the AES+?With a real AES + NeoSD you get:- Actual original hardware- The entire library on one cart, plus homebrew, plus the ability to buy new games from indie devs (some even released in .neo format)- Proven compatibility- Something that actually holds valueAES+ gives you:- Some kind of emulation even if they’re using ASICs, depending on what they actually built- Probably a locked or limited game setup, with no confirmation that NeoSD or any flash cart will even work- “Authenticity” only in the sense that it’s officially licensed- Who knows how long it’ll even be supportedIf the price of an original AES + NeoSD is basically the same as the ultimate edition (price + shipping + tax + tariff), this feels like a complete non-starter.Who is this even for?
>>12543778There are a significant number of people who never buy anything used. The idea of a used AES is just not on the table for them.
>>12543778Wait for full reviews and then we'll see if it's worth it.
A $400 AES is going to look and smell like it was pulled from the dumpster.
OPs post is full of weird typos, strange arguments, falsehoods and assumptions. Who is he trying to convince? Who is this thread even for?
>>12543778>Noooo you have to buy a thirty year old second hand piece of crap from a scalper!
>>12543778Jutego participated in a conference about hardware and to talked about the AES+.The console has been reduced to two ASIC chips and the HDMI output has scanlines capability. The carts use high quality flash memory, hence the price. The chip manufacturer is German and they've been given enough money to run a second batch of asic production run if needed in case the fist batch had issues.Special attentions were given to the DAC to preserve image and sound original signature. Expect a Megadrive soon.
>>12543778Explain to me how exactly you plan to get an AES (which sells for like $500), and a NeoSD (which is $700 and out of stock)? The AES alone costs more than the AES+
>>12544317>Expect a Megadrive soon. It's the Neo Geo Pocket.
>>12544324"He speculates that while Nintendo might not follow this route, other companies or Playon could potentially replicate the success with systems like the Sega Mega Drive in the future (12:52)."
>>12543778>Who is this even for?Who is the Neo Geo even for full stop?Do fa/g/gots really just play fighting games single player all day repeating the same 2 moves to cheese out the CPU? Wow what a gaming experience.
>>12544323You can find them for decent prices (~$300) on JP auction sites often.
Is there any confirmation about whether or not the AES+ will support UniBios?
>>12544339Do they come with controllers? Because as far as I know, controllers are another $150 and memory cards are another $50 (not actually sure if the memory card is necessary for the NeoSD)
>>12544340Most likely won't. Looks like it will have its own embedded bios that will be switchable (?)>>12544341Some do, depends on the listing. I have 6 controllers and never paid over $80 for any one of them.
>>12544340"On-screen BIOS and DIP Switches located on the bottom of the console"That's all we have officially on the subject.
>>12544330Honestly has a good library of games but a ton of them are too hard to enjoy
>>12544353Walk me through what a typical day of playing Neo Geo looks like. Assuming people actually play this thing.
>>12544356Short sessions per game as it mirrors arcade gaming habits/difficulty/skill/quarter-muncher... as with most arcade games, best to play with others but there's also single player games that are worth playing, like pulstar and neo drift out.Neo Geo CD controller is what most people go for as it's comfortable in large hands but honestly the bean style controller is a better experience in my opinion. It's loud and very tactile and adds to the experience. It's not a console that has long engaging games but it pairs well with casual gamers who want to sit down and play for an hour or two then get on to other things.
>>12544356I rarely play for more than 20 minutes at a time. I’ll pick up a game, toss like 5 or 10 credits in (I usually play on MVS mode) and then play until I run out. Lots of autists get all obsessed about 1CC’ing games, I never spent enough time in arcades to get anywhere near that good and frankly think I’d find it to be too fatiguing to even try and get that good, so I just play simply for fun and try to get a bit further than I did before. Then I’ll usually turn it off and go do something else. I often keep coming back to the same game at a time, instead of cycling through them, but depending on my mood.
>>12544310For the past year there's been one extreme faggot who does nothing but spam AI-generated OPs on this board, always filled with the exact same issues you pointed out. Why does he use AI to make the OP? No one fucking knows. It's not frequent or targeted enough to be some third world engagement farmer making pennies with each thread. My guess is he's actively training the AI until it can simulate online discussions down to a T before unleashing it in full; that's going to be a real problem if it turns out to be true.
>>12544370>Short sessions>causal gamers>>12544386>20 minutes at a timeThat makes sense. The aura around Neo Geo is that it is a hardcore console, but in reality is very casual. Maybe the most casual. Like Wii but for boomers.
>>12544527Hardcore cult following. It's allure is mostly on how well the games were made through it's lifetime like the music, art direction, attention to detail, etc. There's also the speculative collectors market. Don't think those are people who are actually playing the games but have just continued to hype its legacy. It'll be interesting to see if more indie devs or even SNK breathes more life into it by releasing new games that are maybe less arcade focused as the hype around the preorders continues.
>>12543778Bro you could have gotten a 1 slot MVS for about 40-80usd a couple of years ago depending on revision.
>>12544527What the other anon said, it’s hardcore for how intense the fanbase is, and legitimately the reason why the games have such staying power for me is because of how well made they are. The graphics are nice, colourful, and detailed— the gameplay is simple but challenging— and with very few exceptions, the games are great as 1P and 2P. The quality is very consistent across the library.
Ok, i'll bite >>12543778>Why would anyone buy the AES+?Because its white!>With a real AES + NeoSD you get:>- Actual original hardwareYup.>- The entire library on one cart, plus homebrew, plus the ability to buy new games from indie devs (some even released in .neo format)I wont pay the onion fuckers one single $. They might wanna re-release all of the SNK published titles. And then some new games. But seriously. Cut the hysteria and just lean back and see how this one turns out.
>>12543778Why buy this one I can buy an evercade instead.I'm kidding (but I'm actually kind of tempted not going to lie) but with so many ways to play neo geo game I'm not sure I'm willing to spend that amount of money just to play twinkle star sprites
>>12544324>>12544317I'd love one for homebrew purposes
>>12545069They're reproducing the hardware, not inventing a new product.
>>12544393I take back the thing I said about typos though. It was me reading the AES + NeoSD as if he had said AES +. The rest of my post I stand behind though. Overall this thread just seems like a waste of space, more than usual.
>>12544330People with friends. Families. And the people you specify. I fall into all three categories.
>>12543778I have an Neo SD pro, I'll still get some of the carts just to own something that used to be so expensive. Think about it like this, its like having 130 arcade motherboards in one package, pretty cheap if you think of it that way. They are $90, its fuck all. These aren't the type of thing you will get for half price a year later.>>12544284They used to be much cheaper from Japan, the MVS motherboards are still pretty cheap still. I had an MVS setup but got absolutely sick of all the wires and crap. IGS PGM is cheap but I guess people have to wait until Elon Musk tweets about it first.>>12544356There is no way you could ever get sick of playing the same Snes or Genesis games every day. I usually play the early games first and fantasize about the situation the Japanese guy who brought it in 1991 was in, maybe he picked it up in his Skyline.>>12544323Backbit exists. Just the check the website each week if you want any of these, its how I got this and the Rhea adaptor for Saturn.
I own an AES and 2 MVSes and I love them but they are ungodly abominations when it comes to build quality and reliability. They're the only pieces of hardware I've had to take a soldering iron to for repairs and fixes. Horrible video quality across all revisions stock, especially RGB. Everything is highly susceptible to noise. The cartridge slot is garbage. I have owned my AES for 15 years and I've never put in a cartridge and had it work the first time. You spend 10 minutes inserting/removing/wiggling/praying just to get a game to work. The power supply situation is horrible, all of the OEM power supplies are either dead or ticking time bombs and finding a replacement is a nightmare. Depending upon your revision/region you have to pick 1 of the 3 correct power supply designations and it's not obvious which one you need without opening the system up and turning it into an einstein project. Then of course comes the situation of how to plug it into a modern TV. If you're an autist like me, then obviously these things don't matter. But to a casual person, who is going to put up with this shit to play Metal Slug? That's who this is for.
>>12545176>Bad build quality MVS????
>why don't people just buy [unofficial alternative] People want real carts at affordable prices, if you can't understand the appeal for that then the AES+ isn't for you
>>12545179Don't you ever wonder how China managed to get their hands on thousands of MVS boards and resell em for cheap?
>>12544676You can still get a consolized MVS on AE for ~$300 with rgb and hdmi output, unibios
>>12544356not him but I've spent a few hours long sessions playing some vertically scrolling and side scrolling beat and shoot em ups in 2P mode that were pretty good, and also very fucking intense, by which I mean very hard (coming from someone whose main experience of both genres was the sega mega drive). I agree that the vs. fighting games like fatal fury, etc are incredibly short lived entertainment and as single player experiences barely worth the boot time. and can be cheesed through with one move, low kick.
>>12545069i wanna see more of this - old consoles, but made into better products with the power of hindsight
>>12545686An XBAND type solution would be ideal
>>12545686This might be hypocritical coming from a guy who plays so many shmups but I don’t understand how anyone can really play more than one or two fighting games, even if you’re playing 2P. They’ve got the same mechanics, the only novel part is how your opponent reacts, so why do you even need more than one game to get that experience?
>>12546060Some are defensive, some are offensive
>>12543778you are not finding a Neo Geo AES console that works for $250
>>12546064Can you elaborate? I’m ignorant here
>>12546060>They’ve got the same mechanics,Not at all. Really they shouldn't even be considered the same broad genre. Games like SF2 and MVC2 have very little in common.
>>12545069It sounds like a cool idea but I bet the CD drive would break like all the time.
>>12546098Yes you are, check JP auction sites, stop being lazy
>>12546118most kof games are offensive while most samsho games are defensive. the mechanics influence how you play the game more than anything else. some are quick pace some are slow.
>>12546202Here is the price every AES system on yahoo japan auctions has sold for since the start of 2026>$740>$380>$320>$380>$220>$1596>$258>$919>$526>$1334You're technically not wrong but 1 selling for under $250 in the last 5 months is grim
>>12546186a modern cd drive won't
>>12545125They are inventing a new product, actually. But even still, this is just including the cd add on without the needless extra steps of making it an add on
>>12546261Adding to that, the one that sold for $220 was just the console. No cables. No controller. They didn't even check if it worked or not, sold as is.
>>12546261point stands even if you look at the mean
>>12546202that's a lot of work just to end up paying like $200 in shipping and tariffs alone
The absolute rock bottom way to get a real original hardware Neo Geo is to look in your area for Neo Geo arcade cabinets. They will most likely have a two or four slot board in them. I've seen them sell for less than $100. Then you can just keep the cabinet and play that, or you can hook board up to a cheap chinese supergun and a cheap controller for said supergun. Next cheapest thing is buying an MVS off aliexpress. Then for games get one of the cheap 161-in-1 MVS boards.
>>12545236>Don't you ever wonder how China managed to get their hands on thousands of MVS boardsHong Kong probably.
>>12545179It's still 30 year old hardware which was on 24/7 for probably a decade. Problems also tend to cascade with these electronics.
>>12543778Anyone who would buy a real vintage AES with the much cheaper and more reliable AES+ on the horizon is even more autistic than NeoGeo fans.
NEO-GEO games are just mediocre. If you want to play fighting games and beat em ups, play capcom. If you like shmups, play cave. etc.
>>12547042Why do you treat video games like a life and death topic?.>achully there's better games on other platformsNo one cares.
The problem here is the carts. I'm already out like $80 just buying the game. Then I have to shell out another few hundred bucks (plus shipping) to send the cart off to NGF to have the insert shredded, an actual official NGF insert printed, and NGF holo stickers for the case, cart, and manual. Then I have to pay for return shipping. All this bullshit just to have an officially licensed game.
>>12547071Jotego said that Plaion wasn't making much profit on the carts because of high quality components. Where would you have liked them to cut costs?
>>12546764The later revisions have most issues grinded out. And unlike CPS2 and Taito F3, SNK actually implemented decent self diagnostics test.
>>12547080He’s referring to 25 year old drama on the Neo geo forums. NGF offered a “service” where they would replace your original insert with a “corrected” (reprint) insert and shred the original.I have multiple AES consoles and I’m tired of dealing with 30 year old hardware issues. As mentioned, the cartridge slots get shitty, caps die, and the lower serial consoles are built from brittle plastic that’s prone to cracking. Hoping the AES+ is a good replacement.
>>12547269>caps dieHow can you be into retro gaming and not at the very least do basic soldering...
