Do you expect the canon of best retro video games to change? MGS, HL1, OoT, Mario 64, etc. Everyone still considers these popular titles the best. With movies, we see titles fall in and out of favor. Citizen Kane was no. 1 for 50 years. Now people prefer other titles. Video game lists tend to be static. Why?
>>12544230When Citizen Kane came out, filmmaking was already a 50 year old profession. Those games are currently in their own little Citizen Kane era. Actually it's closer to like Nosferatu and Lost World age wise, but you get the point.
>>12544230I try really hard not to laugh at children with mental illness, but in your case I just can't help myself.
>>12544230I think it has shifted and continues to shift. Ocarina is less valued than it was in the 2000s, so is Mario 64. In the enthusiast space there are games that were not translated until the last few years that people put in this conversations, like Linda3 and Baroque, and there are video essayists that have entire channels about elevating obscure retro games. Those top 10 lists are trash though, I wouldn't bother with those, most of them are AI written now anyway and that will never have new thoughts.
>>12544230No because people categorize games by console/generations
Citizen kane is outdated political propaganda. It’s not a mystery why no one watches it anymore.
>>12544230yes and no and vice versa

>>12544230>Citizen Kane was no. 1 for 50 years>Video Game lists tend to be static. Why?Probably because it's not been 50 years since those games. That being said, I do think there's a lot that makes it difficult to change the status quo in the current day. Namely because exposure is required, and there's a bunch working against that:1) Most people stick to official releases, which are limited in number and can be limited to platforms2) Not everyone has the time and skill to experience other contenders for the crown3) Gamers are often goobers that have mistaken the process of beating a game to be actual and meaningful personal accomplishment, so they're often more impassioned about "protecting" the experience they had of beating it, of which ranking the game the best is part of itThese things make a lot of entries in lists to be entrenched despite being arguable otherwise, and it likely won't change until the generation that's next due to be nostalgic takes over and puts their childhood games on a pedestal, and the old retro scene (and its members) die off enough that discussion is purely limited to not the gaming sphere as a whole but just the people focused on retro games, and can talk more earnestly and impartially.
>>12544230website lists and people in general are already saying nowadays that RDR 2, Witcher 3, Elden Ring and alot of other more modern games are among the top 10 best games of all time.
