People would have called you gay and beat you up for playing this crap back in the day. But now zoomers rate it as a top retro game. What caused this change?
>>
>>12544425
Well it's a Japan only game and the Japanese are not subhumans that sperg out over people playing cute games
>>
The zoomers you're interacting with aren't normies.
>>

I love Twinkle Star Sprites and would definitely shove OP into a locker.

This game was in American arcades. That's why there's a version with glorious Engrish in it.

Well that aside, good thread OP.
Twinkle Star Sprites has very quickly became my favorite as soon I touched it. So the answer to your question is basic enough: the game is fun, and the cute visuals only make it better.
>>
>>12544723
I've played this game for like 300 hours and have never seen that. That's awesome.
>>
>>12544724
It's easy enough to see, just spam continues at Mevious stage specifically in story mode.
At 10+ he always says the same line(only the number is different), but he has different lines for certain numbers below 10.
>>
>>12544425
Because Americans and western society overall has twisted and absolutely retarded.

Masculine = strong = good.
thus
Femine = weak = bad.
but
Femine = pretty
thus
Masculine = ugly
so
ugly = masculine = good
and
pretty = femine = bad

You can even see this among the oh-so-hateful-towards-men feminists, trannies and other rainbow creatures. They are not pretty, femine and delicate. They all are ugly both physically and spiritually and are vocally proud of this ugliness. The hardcore feminist banshee will not put effort into feminity, instead they gonna go unwashed and unkept and call you a nazi for not embracing it as good.
>>
This game has a side event at EVO Japan in about 3 hours. I doubt it'll be broadcast anywhere, but it's cool people are still playing it.

There is no change. Walk up to a normalfag playing EA Sports and ask him of his opinion on this game. He'll call you a fag all the same.

Zoomers opinions come from their favorite youtuber. The generation is a sponge with no free will of their own.
Simple as.

The game was an unremarkable 5/10 when it landed (both japanese and western reviewers shrugged their shoulders at it). It was just ok.
Being "cute" was never an issue. Every western arcade had magical drop 3, bust a move and puzzlefighter at this point and they got regular play.

Can we get some awful 90s magazine reviews of Twinkle Star Sprites in the thread? I need some vitriol on this lovely Saturday morning.
>>
>>12545190
IGN review of dreamcast version in 2000:
>What happens when you take a 2D shooter and combine it with a puzzle game and 90's graphics? Snore.

>Unlike the majority of 2D shooters, Twinkle Star Sprites isn't much fun in solo play -- you basically slog your way through a series of AI opponents. Neither "Story Mode" or "Character Mode" are that appealing for long-term play. But the game really shines when you've got another buddy playing along

>Twinkle Star Sprites is an okay little 2D shoot-em-up with remotely enjoyable competitive play, and chances are good that it won't hit the States any time soon.

No one was paying them to review it, nor any poltics to review bomb it, it was an import they brought in on their own dime and they were simply underwhelmed. Famitsu gave it a 53/100 as well for the saturn version.

>>12545219

Too low energy, at least pick one that's funny.
Also I bet they got trashed by the AI lol
>>
Cute things are cute.
>>
>>12545225
>Too low energy
They got bored playing it. What would you expect them to write? People didnt overreact like avgn and tardrage over games back then. They just walked away and played better games.
>>
>>12545230
Dunno, I would expect either an "informed" negative review that throughly covers some of the game flaws(even if they might exaggerate or ignore all the good aspects), or trash it mercilessly as if their lives depended on whether people played a cute VS shmup, either work for funsies.
That one was literally just saying 1P mode isn't too interesting because you just fight the CPUs(as opposed to what exactly?) and that it would be fun with friends, but how about you cover how the game actually plays? So far it's unironically worse than the average YT review.

Also yes quite. TSS is straight cute 'em up where everything needs to be cute(characters, zako, bosses, some of the special attacks) though, not just casually cute.

Eh. Yeah, people probably would have called you gay for it, but I'm sure it was still enjoyed in arcades by people who were actually enthusiasts (my arcades never had the game). Gamers enjoyed a lot of things that could get you called gay back then (which was nearly everything). If a game is fun, there are people willing to play it. And as soon as people started playing on MAME it got respect from people into that. The types of people calling you a fag for liking Twinkle Star Sprites didn't overlap heavily with the people deeply into Neo Geo. You might get called gay for playing it, half-jokingly, and you might also play multiplayer with the same person after. By the late 90s/early 2000s, we called stuff "gay," but it wasn't that serious and you wouldn't get beaten up unless you were in some backwards shithole town.

Sure a girly cute em up ranks higher on the homo scale than most - but Pokemon could be pretty cutesy too at times a couple years later, and became the most popular thing ever. Pokemon appealed to fans of both cute and tough things, but still.

On a side note, kids in my region started calling everything gay way more after South Park came out in 1997. That's genuinely the first place I heard the word being used that way, and all the boys at school copied the show. Very early on, most people separated calling things gay from actually hating gay people (season 1 of South Park also had Big Gay Al, and a message of tolerance).

>>12545154
>Being "cute" was never an issue. Every western arcade had magical drop 3, bust a move and puzzlefighter at this point and they got regular play.
This. Bub and Bob are cute little dragons and people played the hell out of their games.
>>12545172
They were everywhere in California at least. Even outside arcades, every other pizza place near me had a Neo Geo. Bust A Move and Metal Slug were very common games to see on them.
>>
>>12545227
sure but when it comes to video GAMES the GAMEplay needs to be fun. otherwise, why not just look up art of the characters?
>>
>>12545324
TSS has great gameplay
>>
>But now zoomers rate it as a top retro game

It's always been a top tier game, retro or not.
>>
>>12545325
it doesn't. you're either being contrarian because you're lonely and want people to talk to you, or you're a dimwit blinded by the art design.
>>

It's also one of the games included in that new NG thing.

Its not even the best in the "cute-em-up" genre. There are cuter girls who fly and shoot things. Cute girls in bunny suits for example.
>>

notice how I did not critique the art design. you're flailing
>>
>>12545357

>>
>>12545362
You can be both at once since cute 'em up is a style rather than a genre(since the genre is still shoot 'em up)

you explicitly said genre not art style

Both Dreamcast and Saturn ports of TSS suck ass in different ways
>>
>>12545376
What's wrong with the Dreamcast one?
True for Saturn though, because the audio mixing sucks and the new character is banlist material in a game where only boss characters are banned.
>>
>>12545379
>What's wrong with the Dreamcast one?
3 frames of lag, darkened graphics, mvs-inaccurate slowdown
>>
>>12545376
At least is a way to play both of them at home on my TV.
Well, nowadays the arcade archives is also an option.
>>
>>12545154
I can hear your joints creaking when you type this, old man. Continue to be afraid of the younger generation playing more retro games than you. It's hilarious.
>>
>>12545365
Even the casualfag people who labeled everything (tvtropes) list both games as cute'em ups. Its a very poorly defined subgenre.
>>
>>12545384
The only valid option in 2026 is emulating the original rom on FBN. Might also want to add 1 frame of run ahead, but it's optional

>3 frames of lag
Fair enough
>darkened graphics
Noticed it, but it's fine really.
>mvs-inaccurate slowdown
Not sure about this one because you are able to change slowdown options. If you set it to "Dreamcast" like here, it will mean basically no slowdown, but there is also an arcade option.
>>
>>12545394
iirc there's 3 options for slowdown which are 68000, arcade and dreamcast
"arcade" is mvs-inaccurate is what I was referring to
>>
>>12545390
Don't think it should be considered an actual genre, since the only difference between shoot 'em up and cute 'em up is literally just the cute aesthetics.
>>
>>12544425
people called me gay and beat me up and I didnt even get to play this game back in the day
>>
>>12545408
can you blame them? they were right, you are gay
>>
>>12545379
>What's wrong with the Dreamcast one?
It's not the one people play on Fightcade so there's no one to play it with.
>>
>>12545426
I mean yea, but it was a technical question.
Think Dreamcast could be an option if you specifically want to play it without slowdown, you can more or less deal with the lag frames through runahead.
>>
>>12545431
1. TSS is nigh unplayable without slowdown on higher levels
2. You can't use runahead for dreamcast
>>
>>12545436
>TSS is nigh unplayable without slowdown on higher levels
It would just lead to a more conservative style of play. The game is rather versatile.
>>
>>12545441
I mean, you can already overlock emulated neo geo's cpu to eliminate slowdown. Nobody does that, because the game was balanced around it.
>>
>>12545447
Not contesting that the intention is to play it with mvs slowdown, just saying that it could be an alternative option for people who might want to try playing it at full speed and see how the games would go.
>>
>>12545154
It's not that it's cute, it's that it's girly. You can have a game that's cute but not girly. Bust a Move isn't girly. Puzzle Fighter isn't girly. Twinbee isn't girly. Magical Drop is very girly and I don't know about you but growing up I never saw a Magical Drop cab and didn't even know it existed until I was out of high school
>>
>>12545465
My university bar had magical drop, as did one of the pool halls down town.
The neo geo 4-slot cabs were everywhere and among the games in them there would a token fighting game, magical drop, metal slug and then some random older game like king of the monsters. Or bust a move, it was everywhere. The older eaely 90s neongeo games tended to end up in convenience stores and pizza place, while arcades got the newer titles. Neo geo machines were among the most common sights that decade besides old sf2 champion edition cabs.

You don't fail the noob check, do you, anon?
>>
>>12545661
I fail to see how could that be an issue at all.
>>
>>12545698
The hitbox of your projectiles is wider than the hitbox of your character, so if you get close enough to zakos you can shoot them from the side. You can use this on one of the early game formations to pop a bubble early and get a faster perfect. A lot of new players go for this and end up bonking instead.
>>
>>12544425
>liking girls is gay
>>
>>12545565
Over here most of the big reds were single slot variants with the rare two slot, bust a move was a really popular pick for non-arcade places like community centers and laundromats because it was pretty family friendly, and if it was a two slot the second game was almost always some kof entry. Actual arcades in the area would sometimes have the four slots with a metal slug game or (a second) kof game, perhaps samsho2, and usually some sports game, but it wasn't til I visited a newly opened arcade did I see magical Drop for the first time, and the damn thing was in an astro city

Back then, it was a game that everyone loved when they tried it. It was a star game of our biweekly gatherings. It was one of the reasons the Saturn was a popular system in my circle of friends. It works great in a party setting, as it can churn through players, and they'd all have a good time in quick bursts yet still worthwhile to watch and observe others.
