Which games do you consider essential to play, can be from any time, any system, any amount. If you believe the entire X68000 library is essential so be it. Give some reasons why preferably.

An example for me is Wolf3d, while Doom has been played by just about everyone I don't believe many people have beaten or even played Wolf beyond the first 3 levels. It may not be a perfect game but I found it very refreshing to go back to "the original fps" and see where the genre got its roots. It definitely gave me a better appreciation for later games, it's also just plain simple fun.

So anons what about (You)?

Phantasmagoria

Looks like an innocent point-and-click adventure but the mirror scenes near the end will awaken sexual fetishes inside everyone.

Space invaders specifically Atari 2600. Mainly because when you play newer shooters like Gunbird you can appreciate where it started and you could say it lead to stuff like Cod and things like it.
Also play the speccy so you can appreciate that IBM CGA was actually pretty good.

System Shock 2 and Halo CE

Fear for its AI. Haven’t played a single game where the AI was so well implemented. Be awesome to get that kind of creativity again.

I can understand the historical relevance of Wolf3D, but I greatly prefer Blake Stone when it comes to games built on its engine.

Doom 1&2, maybe Doom 64
Quake 1, maaaybe Quake 2
Duke Nukem 3D, maybe Blood (hitscan is a bitch)
American McGee's Alice
Psychonauts
Twilight Princess & Wind Waker
Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, maybe CD
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Yoshi's Island
Demon's Crest
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Mega Man X1-4
Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid: Zero Mission

Not sure what other retro games I would unironically recommend someone in the big 2026.

noice
i'd add to that Clive Barker's Undying, though i will admit that game scared me too much as a kid so i didn't get terribly far in it, but it's another quake3 engine horror game

oh and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, duh

Master of Magic? Maybe with the community patch (but not Caster of Magic, that one changes too many things from the original). It's still one of the most well-rounded fantasy TBS games out there.
The Ultima VII games? Combat is shit, but the overall experience is still fine.
Betrayal at Krondor? Probably the first actually good Western attempt at a pseudo-jRPG-ish-style experience (narrative heavy, low character customization).
Diablo/Hellfire (with DevilutionX)? Quite primitive by modern standards, but the art design and atmosphere carries it.
One Must Fall 2097? One of the preciously few decent PC-exclusive fightan gayms (and one of the extremely rare fightans with a proper career mode).
Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and Captain Claw? The only truly good part of Jazz 1 is the music, but Jazz 2 and Claw are solid PC-exclusive platformers.

Much like how FPS games existed prior to Wolf and RTS games existed prior to Dune 2, it's not about being the first it's about being the one everyone copied.

Wolfenstein 3D is pretty fun in its own right.

I think that it's probably too long for its own good, as the Second Encounter setup where each episode is chopped in half flows better to me (also helps that it adds some more variety via new weapons and upgrades).
However, even the base game is an enjoyable arcade-like FPS, it didn't catch on through just novelty, and in a few aspects it's arguably a little faster than Doom.

>>12544504
Never played the original arcade or console ports, but I did play later ones (and many Flash recreations), and I always found it a pretty good little game for a short burst of fun.

Listen, man, I played through Duke Nukem Forever once, I've already suffered multiple lifetimes of bad games on that alone, I don't need more.
It's ok, I can settle for mediocre or flawed games sometimes, that's fine.

SaGa Frontier
Open-world JRPG made at a time when the genre was associated with more linear experiences. It's a good contrast to Square's more popular entries from that same era. The HD remaster features restored content absent from PS1 original.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect, I will have to disagree with you on this one. The fact is, Doom is a better game in every regard. Especially in the non Jewish story line. In fact, I would say Wolfenstein 3d is the one classic FPS not worth playing. Let's compare them real quick:

Doom, Hexen, Heretic, Quake, Blood:
>Evil demonic stuff happens and you are a human survivor battling for humanity.
>settings are cool weird creepy places with either space or medieval dungeon type vibes. Stuff you would never see in real life

Wolfenstein 3d:
>Bad guy is Hitler
>you kill Hitler
>Settings are boring looking

So in conclusion, because doom is better in every conceivable way, and especially the storyline and characters, it is better to play it thus rendering Wolfenstein 3d useless.

ten years ago, I once played this and suddenly lost interested within minutes and decided to go outside instead.

Sorry, forgot to answer the prompt.
Definitely if you guys like turn based strategy, check out Warlords 3 Darklords Rising. It is sprite graphics. In a way it looks kinda plain compared to similar games like Heroes, but that's what makes it so dope. There is no clutter, no unnecessary bs at all. Just pure gameplay, which is mostly strategy but also part chance because of the combat system in which your units roll for attacks. The combat system is simple but unique. At least as far as I know. The fact it is part chance, unlike say Heroes, makes it more intense. Also although you get levelable heroes, and they are important to have for battle, they don't have too much going on. Just stats that you increase with items and leveling, spells if your hero has spells, items, and thats it. You cant fuck yourself over learning like, say in Heroes, where you might be forced to pick between learning two undesirable skills. I love playing it on hardest difficulty but because I am a bitch I play no fog. Fuck no fog it's too terrifying. Also
>beautiful illustrations. For examples at events. Like truly cool pictures. Like pokemon/magic levels of cool.
>Great soundtrack. Soo peaceful and good. Literally top tier.
>Customizable races. 8 races with their own units that you can also swap and customize which units you build.
>I've yet to play another game where you can create a custom flag design.
>Races are not balanced which I prefer because it allows them to be more diverse.
>2d sprite graphics that actually look a lot better than the 3d graphics that came after.

who is "someone"?

i think most modern zoomzooms would hate the UI for MOM and U7. Betrayal AK might be passable but most zoomers can't read either. then again all of the Ultimas and spinoffs are heavy in text and dialogue with no voice-acting except U9 and Arx Fatalis.
most zoomers would also get stonewalled by any platformers that require any bit of skill and/or reflexes.
>>
>>12548130
MoM is quite readable as long as you use the surveyor, and remember that each figure in a stack has individual stats. Also has right-click info for a lot of things. U7 is indeed kinda obtuse when it comes to readily-accessible info.
>Betrayal AK might be passable but most zoomers can't read either.
That's kinda on them. BaK has right-click info (or the older "click on '?', then click on something else" in some areas) for literally everything, including the interface buttons. Probably the only obscure part is the percentage-based bonus/penalty system for equipment/equipment blessings, but it can be easily abstracted to "value with plus good, big value with plus gooder".
>most zoomers would also get stonewalled by any platformers that require any bit of skill and/or reflexes.
I dunno about that. I'm seeing loads of trailers for reflex-based indie platformers and isometric action games, and my 42-y.o. ass simply can't comprehend how somebody can pull those moves off. I'm definitely not in the target public for those.

I think more people should play strategy games. StarCraft 1 and StarCraft: Brood War, TibSun, Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge, Emperor: Battle for Dune, Cossacks, WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos + The Frozen Throne, Age of Mythology + The Titans, Rome: Total War, Command & Conquer: Generals + Zero Hour, Rise of Nations, HomeWorld 2 etc
>>
>>12546501
But also Elite was copied to the point it spawned its own genre or two and it would be retarded to claim it wasn't popular. A 3D open world game that existed for a decade before anything you cited and was ported to just about every damn platform that could run it.

Yep imma play some video games
