it's a downgrade for the nerfed, baby mode physics alone. Not to mention worse level design and worse and fewer power ups. Yoshi and cape both feel like ass to use and slow you down, I'd rather just be normal mario. The overworld is neat and clearly more fun than the worlds in 3 but that's the only thing better about world.

It only has two flaws.

Seriously though, one of the greatest thing of this game is how modular it feels. It's no wonder it's one of the most romhacked games of all time. I really like SMW2:YI too, that's a great game, but it loses some of that pleasant lego-like blockiness.

I play every level when I play it.
I have zero complaints about World or 3. I like the polish of World. The gimmicks are fun to play and SMW has all sorts of different ways to experiment around with many of the levels. You can replay one with green blocks on, or enter with yoshi, or a cape and the level can play differently.
Games are more than reaching an end screen as quickly as possible.
When the credits music switches to high-tempo, that's all the end game reward I needed.

I have to agree with your point about power-ups. Sure, you could grab items as a "faster" way of swimming, but it was nowhere near as great to control as SMB3's frog suit. (Not to mention riding Yoshi underwater is a liability that's more likely to slow you down.)

My arguments in favor of smw:
No frog suit is needed because SMW nailed undewater controls, for the first time in Mario games undewater controls feel good, add new mechanics (grab a shell or an object and go faster)
>Cape better than tanuki
Tanuki has the statue thing but cape is overall more fun in the long run, using the cape at least requires timing, most of the use of the tanuki is still largely the same as raccoon. Spinning using the cape is also faster and more frentic than spinning with the tail.
>Unique items
I know Kuribo's shoe is special and beloved, but SMW has Lakitu's Cloud which is also prerty fun (esepcially if combined with a fire flower, you can be a sort of yokai if you think about it).
I still love smb3 though, I love both games.

I love the game to death but the gigaleak almost ruins it for me. Once you realize how much the dev team struggled making it and how weirdly cobbled together the whole thing is you really can't look at it the same way anymore. There are so many things in the game that just get used once and without any real fanfare, and for the most part there isn't anything in the game that really utilizes the new capabilities of the SNES.

There's also a lot of strange things about the game too, Yoshi Coins feel like an unfinished idea they're like the Star coins from the NSMB games and many take some effort to find except the game doesn't actually keep track of them as a collectible and nothing happens for getting them all except for a 1-up for every 5. Or how about those weird green star blocks that only show up in like 2 levels? Why don't the Blue and Purple blocks have anything in them? Why is "Awesome" the only level in the entire game that looks like that and has those arch shaped platforms? I reiterate it's still a great game and I think it's the best 2D Mario physics they ever did so it's an absolute joy to play, but if you look at it closely it starts to get weird.

The pallet and sprite swap is literally the best completion reward in the entire franchise by a country mile. Every other game in the franchise either gives you nothing, some 1-ups, or 1 extra level. Having every enemy look completely different is really cool.

The opposite for me.
If anything the gigaleak proved that the whole "smw was rushed" meme was always a lie, the team had a lot of experimentation and tried and discarded a lot of things, it's the opposite of the definition of a rushed game. SMW went through a lot of fine tuning (which is also why it's one of the best controlling games ever).
