It has no actual ranged combat and too many dungeon crawling missions.
I suspect the original Master of Monsters is better, but I had little luck getting through the somewhat obtuse interface.
Wesnoth is one of those games I sank hundreds of hours into and cannot overlook its flaws anymore. Just don't play it.

I've been playing Wesnoth since the title screen looked like this, but wouldn't consider it retro since its still in development.

as somebody who actually owned master of monsters, i think wesnoth is a better game. first and foremost for the diversity and moddability. MoM also doesnt have ranged combat, its the same as wesnoth where you choose form attack type 1 or attack type 2 (ranged) and some things just dont have ranged. MoM has magic spells that players can cast 1 of per turn, and globally target any non-master unit to fight an elemental (ranged style combat) once per turn. the units being mostly creatures allows for "cooler" evolutions, but wesnoth has diversity in its factions. also the day/night cycle (which only affects some damage and accuracy) in MoM is more tedius/annoying than it really is for anything strategic. i dont recall if there is a day/night cycle in wesnoth.

ask me anything about MoM, i sunk hundreds of hours into it as a kid.
