>single handedly proves having the latest graphics means jack shit and that gameplay is king
Holy based
>>
Also, the original code is held together by duct tape and dreams.

We almost never properly give enough credit to the fact that this small throwaway handheld game made by like 20 people that was never expected to sell much has 151 of the most memorable monster designs from any game. The graphics of Pokemon are fine. If anything, they're highly undervalued because they're so punchy and get the job done.

the graphics are everything, even if they are "bad" on a technical level, the creature designs is what defines the appeal of the game

threadly reminder that telling him to go back to /vp/ is bannable

Dogshit RPG. Play FF4 or something.
>>
>>12548283
It also proved that gameplay means jack shit.

If "gameplay" means dexterity then yes.

>gameplay is king
Music is essential.

So was FF and DQ.
Hell, FF games were broken in one way or another till like 10.

>>12548283
pokemon had fantastic graphics for the dmg. even the original red and green were leagues above any rpg on the platform, with the possible exception of god medicine
>>12548316
for something possible on gameboy hardware? it's fantastic

I would like to play them again as an adult but i dont have the same patience as before Grinding and leveling up the different Pokemon you catch feels too tedious the best time was playing them as a child or teenager when you were innocent and still had dreams and hope for the world having friends also motivated you to play to trade Pokemon or play against your friends teams playing JRPGs as an adult is too depressing now i understand why Japanese salarymen play JRPGs while being incredibly depressed

>single-handedly
No, it used at least two hands.
>>
>>12548871
>Use 1 Pokemon
>Game requires no grinding
Problem solved.

>has 151 of the most memorable monster designs from any game.
That's like saying Fortnite designs are the most memorable designs. No, the game itself is centered around the characters/monsters, that's why you memorize them.

You can play Pokemon Go for 3 months and memorize all of them, including the really shit ones

>>12548316
Pokemon is much better than FF4

broski the games succeeded because of the anime, not because they were exceptionally good
>>
>>12548287
Games were better when they were like that.

This and the original Japanese famitsu review just shows game journalists were always retarded, both got BTFO by Pokémon

such a gay overused turn of phrase
also not even rly true in this instance. RBY are actually remarkably stable. thats WHY theyre fun to glitch out
>b-but thats just cuz theres no memory protection
so same as every other 8bit game? still plenty of old 8bit games that you can crash. accidentally, even. by contrast, short of literally turning your bag into a RAM editor and fucking around clicking random shit, youd be hard-pressed to actually make these games truly "break". hell, even when you ARE doing that, it still takes a fair bit of effort. but from a normal players PoV? id be shocked if anyone ITT actually managed to crash or even just break something to the point where it was identifiably "wrong" these games via normal play as a kid. even when doing the more well-known glitches, like mew glitch, its still pretty hard to fuck anything up other than your hall of fame data and you can just go beat the E4 again anyways if that matters. while the most potentially damaging glitches, like the zzazz glitch, are just things that youll literally NEVER accidentally run into in normal play

so for a small, basically indie, studios first game?
lets take FF as an ex. in FF, several of the main stats dont do anything at all, half the classes are thus defunct, and half the magics dont do anything either. and thats just off the top of my head, theres a lot more thats borked. it literally took them till like FF6 or 7 before they actually got it all together and properly polished. didnt matter tho, because the game(s) still worked, and were still fun, even if a lot of things werent quite working as intended. pokemon had a very similar "issue", but unlike square, they managed to polish most of it out by their follow-up game, just a few yrs later
so if anything FF has a better claim to being held together with dreams. tho it probably wasnt "dreams" in that case. more like a lone iranian mans frustration with being unable to computer

>>12548283
Fucking BASED!
>>
>>12548283
Pokemon is premise first, aesthetics second, gameplay third if even that.
>>
>>12548296
good graphics only help to enhance an already good game.

A good game with bad graphics will still survive because the game is good. A bad game with bad graphics sinks to the bottom and becomes forgotten. A bad game with good graphics gets some initial draw from looking pretty but gets dropped because the game sucks to play. A good game with good graphics becomes a memorable experience that we continue to talk about 10+ years later.
>>
>>12548283
How does missingno work in theory? The process, what exactly is going on? How did someone manage to figure that exact sequence of process?
>>
>>12548283
To be fair, the graphics were decent as far as GameBoy games went at the time, and while more powerful handhelds existed, they were largely irrelevant, so for most people, simple little graphics like what R&B delivered were just what the majority of handheld games were at the time. You could tell what things were, the Pokemon sprites looked cute and/or cool, and that was really all that was needed.
>>
>>12550940
And at the end of the day, the design of the Pokémon ruled all. If the monsters were boring or looked like shit, nobody wood of cared, but the designs covered everything, with silly monsters, cute monsters, badass monsters, and generally intriguing monsters (what does Diglett look like under the ground? How do "multi" mons like Dugtrio, Exeggcute, and Magneton work? Why do Voltorb and Electrode look like Pokeballs?)
