Since it's star wars Month and May the 4th, since the first of may I started playing Star wars games. I'm not one of those nerds who do the "Star wars month" so this is my first rodeo and I say it's not bad revisiting games I already played but a long time ago or dicovering new ones.
I started this month by playing "Star Wars Shadow of the Empire" on emulator and I would say it's even my first time trying the N64, I mean I tried when I was a kid from a friend house and played Mario Kart but nothing else, I was a PS1 kid. Anyway it wasa good game with a modern controller and the only problem was the speeder level on Tatooine but after watching a video online I discovered hwo to beat it, it was a nice game the problem for me it didn't had enough story but the little it had it felt like a good spin off of star wars like they really put tought in it and Dash is a cool character for what little we know.
Now I started yesterday "Dark Forces" I played a long time ago so it wasn't a new game for me and I would say it still holds up, this time I'm playing the PS1 port not the Dosbox, I feel it's a little harder than the PC port but mainly for the aiming and the frame drops sometimes has but in general a real good Doom Clone.
So are you playing some star wars related games this star wars month?
>>
I played both the N64 (emulated) and PC version of Shadows of the Empire and the Speeder controlled better on PC for me, but that's because I don't have a good analog pad. Anyway I love that game.

Dark Forces is one of my favourite games ever, the PSX port is fine overall, it could have been worse when you compare it to other DOS FPS ported to PSX like Hexen or even DN3D. But the DOS version is better. It also has a fan made sourceport now (I'm not talking about the remaster)
>>
Rogue Squadron is great too; but be warned you absolutely need a good analog pad for this game. The PC doesn't really support kb+mouse, I mean it does, but all it does is EMULATE a joystick so it feels absolutely terrible and has a huge deadzone, it's unplayable that way. I can't believe noone's made a patch for real kb+mouse support.

and you should play Jedi Knight 1 and 2 once you're done with Dark Forces
>>
Star Wars have garbage games and garbage movies

>and you should play Jedi Knight 1 and 2 once you're done with Dark Forces
I was already planning to play those after Dark Forces, then if the month is finished I'll move on to my backlog or if I have time I'll play Republic Commando on my Xbox that I fixed.
>>
i didnt know it at the time but SOTE64 released alongside a novel and comics so it wasnt meant to be the only narrative for that plot. back then i didnt really care if everything made sense but had i been older i probably would have wanted the comics and stuff to understand more of the plot. good game.

The book had a lot of weird shit in it, typical of EU writers. Prince Xizor is basically a reptilian chad who can seduce women with his pheremones when he's not fucking his one-of-a-kind super duper sexbot assistant, Guri. He almost bagged Leia halfway through the story, but Chewy started autistically screeching to snap her out of it. Guri was hot, so she survived and became the SWEU equivalent of Samus.

Hey OP, I recently just finished Dark Forces DOS version recently using The Force Engine source port, saved me 30 bucks from buying the Remaster (which fyi the original DOS version has been delisted from steam/gog now...). This is my first time actually finishing the game, as a kid I could never get past Jabba's ship with the Kell Dragons. What a game though, still holds up.

Think I might do a new play-through of KOTOR 1 this month.
>>
Anyone else used to play SWG online back during it's popularity? Been tempted to revisit it a private server of it but I don't know if I have the time anymore.

Shadows has a book that’s pretty good and really fleshes out the games story if you’re interested
>>
>>12548937
That fan made sourceport was awesome. The game really feels like the movie when it comes to the blaster fights, which is pretty awesome.

SotE was an incredible game at release, the Hoth mission alone was mind-breaking for anyone alive. And the on-foot levels were still impressive because of the rather realistic graphics, and people don't mention this often but SotE was one of the earliest 3D games where you could control a character from a 3rd person perspective on a freeroam 3D space. There was of course Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Crash... (even though there's not even that much space to move around in that one), and SotE provided gigantic, fleshed-out levels with verticality and complex structure, and honestly decent controls, sure it has jank in there but for the most part it works, and in 1996 this was simply a luxury to have on many levels, not just as a Star Wars product in the middle of the 90s star wars mania revival, but also a quality state-of-the-art video game that was simply not possible on other systems, PC ans PS1 were still with the Rebel Assault games, arcades were still only 3D shooters. SotE was part of the pioneers of early 3rd person action games, something that somehow feels memoryholed.

OP here

I was trying to search about it, I found the comic I tried to read the first 2 issues, it's okay story I expected more Dash but still good to know even what's happening at the original cast between movies, I can imagine at the time being more impactful for fans.
>>12549643
I really noticed that I liked the level design and the feel, for me lacked voice dub but I know limitations of a cartige etc etc, but it was really good. I played more first person I tried third it was nice but I preferred more the first person camera because in third I felt it was getting stuck a lot and I loved it the cockpit in the space scenes was good and I was amazed how good looked and felt, really made me live the scene of the movies, while the on walk sections the first person camera was perfect but infact it felt boring that you can't even see your arm.
>>12549095
I heard of the port when the remastered hit and I had your same thought but I didn't play it but nice to have a backup plan.

Well now I go and play more dark forces on ps1 emulator.
Have a nice star wars day everyone

This game would be a dream remake for me. The original was janky and unc clunk when it released, so it could only go up from there if they were hands on with a decent phoned in budget.
>>
>>12549643
This. Nobody I knew complained about SotE. We were all rapt and stunned by how much it felt like being in the movies at the time, especially the Hoth mission. All the complainers came later in the 2000s and unfairly compared it to later games.
>>
>>12548923
I remember renting this as a kid but my only actual memory of it is some cave with a yeti (?) in it.
Weird what gets stuck in your head.

I read the book a loooong time ago but I remember it really filling in all the gaps of the game and it was a very fun read. It should be easily available. I never read the comics at all so no clue how good or bad they were. The whole point of this was to do everything: games, books, comics, figures… everything except a movie because Lucas was testing the waters to see if Star Wars was still relevant and yeah it was. I wish he had made this an actual movie instead of the trash prequels but he got what he wanted out of this experiment because it confirmed to him he could do another trilogy and make a shit ton of money off merchandise aside from just the movies.

Also speaking of books the Heir to the Empire trilogy is in my mind the definitive episode 7, 8, and 9 and not that Disney garbage if ur interested at all in the books. I wish they made games based on that trilogy.

>I wish they made games based on that trilogy.
It's a HUGE shame that there have not been more games that used the expanded universe. It is filled with content that is perfect for video games. Tales of the Jedi, Dark Empire, The Thrawn Trilogy man there was so much stuff that would have made a perfect transition into video games.
>>
i think this game benefitted a lot from the graphics of the time being low detail and somewhat abstract because it contributes to some of the unease the game has. i remember being scared or tense playing it growing up. obviously it made the wampas terrifying but it even made common fodder like the storm troopers intimidating and also made some of the robots you fought really scary because you could only half make out what the fuck they were in later levels like xizors palace.

>>12548923
It is not "star wars' month. You faggots do not get a whole fucking month.
>>
>>12550767
i don't even like star wars but if darkies get a whole month for them anything is fair game

This shit started with as a Disney marketing campaign, fuck off
>>
>>12548923
I spent May the 4th reading comics and playing this game. Got my ass beat, how'd I beat this as a kid.
>>
>>12550956
It most definitely didn't start with Disney, but they wholeheartedly embraced it in their marketing, yeah.
>>
Man looking back to pre prequel Star Wars is always kind of nutty. I remember being nuts for Heir to the Empire when it was being released
>>
>>12550040
for me i wouldnt want a remake. i would want this game to have a level editor so you can play custom maps the same way DOOM has.
>>
>>12550526
iirc KoToR used quite a bit of lore from the Tales of The Jedi comics

The game came out in late 1996, when console 3D gaming was starting to become mainstream. But up to that point third person run and gun styled platformers were still an experimental thing for the most part, outside of a few attempts like Fade 2 Black and even the Nakatomi section in Die Hard trilogy. Shadow of the Empire was one of the first real attempts at a third person platformers shooter. In a way it is a sequel to the older Super Star Wars games on the SNES. As those games have a mix of vehicle driving sections and platforming as well. In Shados of the Empires case, the piloting sections were far more popular and it lead to the Rouge Squadron series. I would have liked to see a sequel to Shadows. I feel like the devs at Factor 5 could have made a much better sequel.
>>
>>12548923
Should I play this on N64 or PC?
>>
>>12551389
They're both good, just don't go expecting a modern third person shooter for the PC version just because it's on PC like those stupid reviews on Steam, it's still a N64 port from 96 with the same controls. For what it's worth I think the mouse controls are fine and made the vehicle levels easier for me.
>>
>>12551402
neat alright thank you
>>
>>12551389
I advocate for N64 original, simply because I think the CG cutscenes are ugly as sin while the N64 cutscenes have that classic LucasArts 2D spritework feel
>>
I bought the Jedi Knight bundle with the intention of starting with the first game but it crashes on loading the first level :)
